Does This Photo Shoot Glamorize Violence?

This might be one of the most disturbing, distasteful things we’ve ever seen. A Bulgarian fashion magazine recently featured a photo shoot of models who appear bloodied, bruised, slashed, punched and burnt, with the tagline, “Victim of Beauty.”

But if the images make you think of domestic violence, the editor-in-chief of 12 Magazine says that’s your own sick mind at work. “This shoot was left without an introductory text, thus allowing everybody to translate it the way they want,” editor-in-chief Huben Hubenov told The New York Daily News. “A lot of people read ‘domestic violence’ in those pictures, but it is their mind who came up with that explanation of the shoot, not ours."

Hubenov adds: “And if they took the time to actually examine the photographs, instead of superficially jumping to [conclusions], they would’ve seen girls who look at us strongly, who look confident, who are above the wounds, above everything. They are independent.”

Others strongly disagree. “Violence against women exists way too frequently in real life for us to want to look at it in a fashion magazine,” blogger Cheryl Wischhover wrote on Fashionista, joining a chorus of other outraged bloggers. However, some readers called the shoot beautiful and “thought-provoking.” What do you think? Do these photos glamorize violence?

I like them i think the idea of victim of beauty and the way the did the pictures to portray that idea is amazing. It wasn't trying to glamorize violence, it never said anything about violence. Even if this had to do with violence the pictures would still be great because they look like they have had that tough situation in life but they fought through it because of their facial expressions.

Victim of beauty? as in what women will do to themselves to be considered beautiful? I think that's a riot. It's a statement of art. Not a glorification of violence. Women nip here, tuck there, tattoo thos, permanent makeup that... add 2-3 cup sizes to their breasts... inject collagen, botox..... Botox! UGH!! THAT is what is violence. And they PAY "through the nose" to do it! It's self mutilation! THAT is the violence. GREAT statement. I love it.

i'm not the violent type, and this is just wrong!! when you know women get abused by cowardly men around the world.. this just makes it seem that its alright to beat them up because they'll get over it and put make-up on. all i know is why post pictures like this?!?!?!

It's the opposite. It highlights domestic violence in a powerful way. He states that they are fashion victims. So it is more a political barb at the industry.

While it doesn't make me want to go out and get myself beat up by a man, it doesn't glamorize domestic violence. Quite the opposite I think, I think it makes me see how serious and hurtful it can be and makes me want to protect myself against it more than I already try to do.

It's quite the opposite of glamor. It shows that no amount of make-up fixes the result of violence.

The make-up's very well done. I know that isn't the subject, but I think the make-up does look great.

Anyway, the photos don't look 'glamourised'. Actually, it looks painful and I'd never want to look like any of those photos.

If you have ever gotten a black eye, a tooth knocked out,a staggering blow to the head you would not see any beauty in this photo.

This photo shoot wasn't done by E! it was done by a Bulgarian magazine. You have no idea how much the models of these photographs made.

"if they didnt they wouldnt make as much money!" as if you were talking about the photographs of this photo shoot. Your comment was irrelevant and holds no value.

They are completely removed from any context. The wounds are presented like high fashion or fine jewelry. The wounding of typical models is the focal point. Bad taste.

How are they in any way presented as "fine jewelry."?
  • Elizabe... El Jefe 2012/06/23 14:04:06

The setting and lighting are visual indicators of a manner of staging reserved for high fashion magazine shoots. They are equating the wounds with the products ordinarily highlighted by these techniques, one of which is jewelry.

I disagree, I think the dark background is just to emphasize the women themselves, and give a depressing tone.

Maybe that's the point. It's not meant to glamorize, I think it has a message to women in domestic violence cases to not bow their heads in defeat, that although they are battered they are still beautiful and be confident despite what they they've been through.
