I wish there had been an other option. It really depends on the person. It worked for me.

    rehabilitated

From my experience I think it goes in most cases for worse. I have a friend in prison serving sentence longer than 6 years. I stayed in contact with him but now after all these years I am thinking to myself that wasn't such a good Idea. He still have a bad habits such as use of abusive language, Insecurity, unstable personality ,fed up with attitude. That didn't change which bothers me. He said that he learn a lot in prison, but God knows what he learned over there. He became a better actor to hide himself. I even think he stayed in contact with me because somebody need to send him books and money which I did few times. Some people were telling me to get away from him as far as I can. I agree but right now it's not going to be easy.

The examples I've met lead me to laugh at the idea of rehabilitation. It may happen, but it's certainly not the rule.

I know of two people that went to prison and both came out more focused and one became a very productive member of society.

I chose for the better, because seemingly you would have had another option , such as other, because all people do not rehabilitate the same. Some people learn from their failures and incarceration, and then there are some who are so addicted to their behavior, that they never learn. Circumstances have a lot to do with how they adjust to society when they are released, and then some have been incarcerated unjusrly, never should have been there in the first place.

As long as we make prison a easy laid back place then it wont help anyone, but if we do what that sheriff in Arizona is doing every where then prison might just be successful!

I chose for the better because that corresponds more with how I live my life... in a positive light...

The obvious missing third choice would be yes, because change is inevitable, whether it be for good or bad.... which direction depends on the person being imprisoned. Their childhood, family life, whether or not they are guilty, remorseful, and prolly a bunch of other characteristics and causes and effects and situations that would move someone towards improvement or degradation....

Many people in prison get their first chance at an education. Many get degrees. But more importantly studying for a degree opens up a whole new way of thinking. Instead of thinking about survival and base stuff, they get to ponder more longterm things and it removes them from the cage of their mind. I do believe that some get true enlightenment: they realize that they are no longer bound by the life they were born into.

Prison doesn't want anyone to change if every prisoner changed jails would be out of business. Crime is to be controlled, not gotten rid of.

Wish there was a 3rd choice. For the most part, I don't believe people come out of prison any better than they were when they went in. But, we recently had our family reunion. We took pictures of the 2nd and 3rd generations and I was totally surprised at how well most were doing. 2 of the 3rd generationors had spent about 4 years (each) in prison. One now has his own sign making business and the other is a leadman insulator. Both are doing very well. (The insulator was a straight A student and good athlete and served in the military, then got mixed up in dope.)

I selected this because they can never come out good. Prison is a place some never want to come back to and others make a home, because there is nothing else they can do, but come back. Depends on who we are talking about.

A third option would be good. It could make you or break you. It depends on the individual. But a lot of people die in jail because they are just not tough enough.

Some it's for the best. I've recently met a lot of people who have come out of prison who changed their lives around. Going to school, working, working on bettering their lives. But I've also met people who just never learn and keep going back to prison. -_-
