Does Eating Organic Food Turn People Into Jerks?

Admit it, you've definitely noticed. The people who eat organic foods, shop at farmers markets and carry their own reusable shopping bags may be healthier and doing their part for the Earth, but they're also a little bit ... obnoxious. And a new study proves it's not just a stereotype.

organic food

Study author Kendall Eskine, assistant professor of the department of psychological sciences at Loyola University in New Orleans, conducted a series of experiments and found that organic food eaters were much more judgmental of other people's moral transgressions. They were also less likely to help out a needy stranger than non-organic food eaters.

"There's something about being exposed to organic food that made them feel better about themselves," says Eskine, according to The "Today" show. "And that made them kind of jerks a little bit, I guess." Why? "People may feel like they've done their good deed. That they have permission, or license, to act unethically later on." We think it's great to eat as healthy (and as greenly) as possible. But it's no excuse for turning up your nose at Ding Dong lovers!

I tried going organic and discovered that i had no patience for it. So, if anything, it probably enhances their personality and i'd probably be living proof if i continued on that route of organic eating :)

for those who may get the wrong impression :) ... it would enhance my impatience for such things ... the only jerk i wish to be associated with is the jerk meat that can be had from deer meat ... now, there's a yummy morsel of goodness!!!

Not necessarily, it's the ones who look down on other people.

This is the same diet logic that drives me insane, you're the one on a diet not me. I do not need to know that what I'm eating has x amount of calories in it. Don't be that person.

I know it has a lot of calories, that's why I'm eating it. I burn right through them.

My son's room mate, (that we all love alot and wish well), went from normal, to vegetarian, to vegan, to becoming a Nylist, to a walking skeleton with no hope, no goals, no cares, no nothing. Suicidal and depressed as hell. People have to eat to live or they get mental breakdowns and depression. He never preaches his dogma at anybody but it's a real expensive PIA to make food he will eat for a party or something cuz even vegans get tired of salad, salad, salad....try making a vegan a dessert. Buwahahahahaha...ain't happenin'...if it does happen, it's disgusting. Off topic a bit, just had to be said. Thank you.

People that only eat organic food may TEND to be jerks, but the food doesn't make them that way. They're already that way before they choose to go that route.

In fact, totally agree and say, they make that choice based on their belief that they ARE indeed better than the rest of us and deserve to eat better too! And they want everybody to know, because, duh, they are so much smarter and want to spend their money on a $10 bunch of carrots. Because even the carrots think they are superior!

A similar Question was asked by Lesley Stahl, off-camera on 60Minutes, to Barney Frank . . . And his response was . . . "Okay, let me see here . . . Where is it? . . . Here . . . I found it by feeling for it Anyway, if you jack-off a lot will you go blind?"

Thanks. I needed that. [I don't know how I could ever get confused about the two possible choices. Hmmmmm?] Maybe it has something to do with those 5-Dollar-a-Dozen Eggs that I ate for Breakfast this morning . . . ? ? ? ?

BUT!!!, They go home and dig out their secret stash of Mountain Dew, Little Debbies & Doritos. Oh yes, they do! But by preaching at others and saving them from the sin of eating food from a grocery store, they are still better than we are, and they sleep well knowing that.

Kimmel said it best. Likely they were already jerks or snobs.

I eat organically, shop at farmers markets, grown my own garden, and use reusable shopping bags. I'm not a jerk, and I don't look down on others for choosing non-organic food. I am also quite helpful.

    But. Whatever.

We as taxpayers should demand a refund on this childish escapade. Why do they keep messing around with the stupid surveys anyway? Good old-fashioned commonsense Will reveal beyond a shadow of a doubt, that people from all walk of life are obsessed with their own political types and varieties of drama.zc

That's just crazy and doesn't even make sense. Personally I eat organic and help people out all the time. Seems like someone just wants people to think a certain way about eating organic.

Or to make people realize they've become a cliche. Not to make people think that cliche is all. Though it can make the simple minded people think all the people in that demographic are the same..

"Personally...I help people out all the time" ... I am a superior being than the rest of you poor bastards. Thanks sir! Nice backpack :/ Is it full of all-natural twigs and bark for your Whole Foods lunch later? Cuz heaven help us that eat the regular twigs and bark from the, you know , (whispers) grocery store.

It has far more to do with liberals being more likely to buy organic food. Liberals are often arrogant and selfish pricks. I mean anyone arrogant enough to think they deserve to steal from others and spend other peoples money on the same things they run from paying has to be arrogant. It is like when almos daily you see that Prius driver driving 10 under the speed limit in the fast lane oblivious of all around them.

I don't think we can entirely generalize, but I think only some can afford to always buy Organic.

I had an incident though, while we're on the subject. A woman was behind me in line at the market when I was asked "what type of bag I preferred" by the bagger.. when I heard this older lady (with her own little, crumpled cloth bag) say "why don't you just bring your own bag?". As I was responding to the store clerk and such.. this lady said it AGAIN. I told her, "I didn't have one with me (and implied I didn't need this (her hassling me) at the moment. She got all huffy and said "WELL, I want to save the PLANET.. I don't want to see the Earth fall apart" etc. ...I just got my groceries and said "Well, good for you.. you'll be here when it does". I was just very tired and she was annoying. I have a few of those bags in my trunk that I have not been consistent with. Frankly, I find them a bit awkward to carry when full, the long straps, things aren't packed the same way.. I don't know.. so call me lousy. I've been recycling a long time though.. do I get points?

consistent frankly awkward carry straps packed lousy ive recycling points

Reusing is way better than recycling, but besides that you should be embarrassed that you were so rude with an old lady. Not proud.

Be very proud!!! Eff that nosey, old, arrogant bitch. Those damn "green" bags are made in China! How is that helping save the planet? Slave labor, suicides daily from work conditions, but lawdy-lawdy, gotta make them green grocery bags for that old bitch in USA so she can boast about it. JC, get real people.

..you are saying I was the rudest one here?? First of all, she was not some frail, limping lady, but one of those hippie types that doesn't do her hair, etc. - and it was none of her business.

(When I mentioned recycling, too, I mean for all of my glass jars, paper, cartons, etc., that I take to the recycle bin).
