Does Drinking Soda Lead to Depression?

It looks like soda is taking another hit. We already know that sodas are packed with sugar and aren't healthy for our bodies. But now it sounds like the sugary drink isn't good for our mental health either. Participants who drank more than four servings of soda each day were 30 percent more likely to be diagnosed with depression than those who didn't drink soda at all.

The study, which will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's yearly meeting in March, involved about 260,000 participants between the ages of 50 and 71. Researchers tracked their consumption of drinks like soda, tea, coffee, etc from 1995 to 1996 and then, a decade later, asked if they had been diagnosed with depression. Do you think soda leads to depression? Or is the study's findings just a coincidence?

SHINE.YAHOO.COM reports:
We know that sugary sodas aren't good for our bodies; now it turns out that they may not be good for our minds, either. A new study has found a link between sweetened soft-drinks and depression -- and diet sodas may be making things worse.

It never caused it in me. Don't get me wrong, I dislike soda, but I didn't have any mood change when I cut it out of my diet. Just because they found a higher percentage in soda drinkers doesn't eliminate the possibility that they may have been drinking more soda because something bad happened and that something bad was the real cause of their depression.

The study does not demonstrate or support a causal relationship, so you'd really have to go on a limb to make the positive claim that soda leads to depression...at least on empirical grounds. There may be rational arguments in favor though, which could provide an additional excuse for more research money. ;)

It can lead to depression if not consumed with a healthy lifestyle. Consuming tooo many fake calories and fake vegetable oils can lead to improper develop of the fatty cellular membrane that surrounds both your neurons and the spines that come off them, called axons and dendrites. This causes an interference in signals being sent between individual
neurons and decreased signaling can lead to depression.

Drinking soda and not exercising is what can cause depression. That and never drinking water. You can't live on soda alone :/

This is one ofvthose studies that stretches things to reach its own presumed outcome. It's very possible it's a coincedence or that they drink soda as a way to self-medicate for depression. I used Mt Dew for years to medicate for ADHD, and chocolate as treatment for depression

The fact that there is a corelation between the two is NOT proof, otherwise you could prove that in England, Churches cause Pubs. The article says "Participants who drank more than four servings of soda each day were 30 percent more likely to be diagnosed with depression than those who didn't drink soda at all." But all this MIGHT mean is that people with depression like to drink soda.
