    cigarettes death annual

Fast food and non-organic food makes people obese, the 2nd largest killer, yet its all legal

Alcohol causes thousands of deaths via violence, approx. 10,839 car wrecks annually in US alone, etc yet thats legal

Oh wait... because cannabis, despite it not causing any of these problems... it'll just make you a little slow with excessive use... that should be illegal?

Lets hear you bitch about cigarettes, booze, fast food and sedentary lifestyles, Art. You're always complaining about Michelle Obama's healthy lifestyle campaigns, claiming that she needs to mind her business. I feel you, I really do. But how is banning pot any different? That's interfering in people's lives, decreasing bodily sovereignty and limiting personal freedom. No amount of studies will ever justify that.

  • Gail Margare... 2012/08/31 00:27:21

Why do you think the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world? We spent money to have law enforcement find them. Inventing ways to detect pot has wasted a lot of tax dollars. We spend a lot more incarcerating them. At least legalize hemp. If you read about it you will agree.

You have to think about the other things pot smokers are doing too. Many smoke cigarettes as well, or drink alcohol and do other drugs such as ecstasy on a somewhat regular basis. I don't believe anything anyone says about marijuana because the governments want to give it a bad image, while people want to give it a good image. I don't trust people, or the government. Marijuana also affects people very, very differently.

While I agree that regular use of pot will make you a bit slower on the uptake, I don't think it has any lasting affects. I smoked for a couple of years regularly and one day noticed that I wasn't thinking as clearly and problems and puzzles were a little harder to solve. I quit smoking every day and this corrected.

As with anything I believe the key is moderation. I'll get high once in a while, much as I'll have a few beers now and again, but in excess anything can be harmful.

Nonsense. I used to smoke like crazy and at 30 retrained as an electronics technician, in a foreign language. The instructors had no idea I was using and gave me no chance of passing (They reckoned it was hard enough doing it in your own language, plus at that age, plus we only had 2 and a half years to learn instead 3 and a third) But I ended up passing in the top 5 of my class.

This question begs for an "undecided" or "not enough information." Studies have to have repeatable results before we accept their conclusions. Also, the study was aimed at people who used it steadily, starting at adolescence. It tells us nothing about low to moderate usage. All substances, including legal ones like alcohol or sugar or caffeine, can hurt you if they are overused.

Why am I not surprised every time a study say's no harm done.. they come out with one that contradicts it..I don't trust any of these "mystery study's"..It's just more propaganda to justify criminalizing it's use...I'd like to counter with if you drink alcohol on a daily basis from your teens to lets say your forty's..Your memory and IQ will go down, your learning ability decreases significantly ,and you will be a chronic alcoholic on the verge of liver failure..

It sounds possible. If they've done the research who am I to claim it's false?
I wonder if there is a similar correlation with people who drink large amounts of alcohol in their early teens. It would be safe to assume that it is more harmful using any kind of drug before your brain is fully developed.

Because everyone knows who funds this kind of thing and why. It even mentions it at the bottom of the article.

"there was growing concern in the US that cannabis was increasingly being seen as a safe alternative to tobacco."

Seriously? Are you fu$%ing kidding me? CANNABIS IS SAFER THAN TOBACCO!!!! It's safer than aspirin! Aspirin made me vomit blood... I've never vomited blood from cannabis... in fact digesting cannabis is actually good for your digestive system.

We need to legalize cannabis immediately for people over 21. It is a travesty that hundreds of thousands of people, doing no harm, just relaxing with a relatively harmless herb are thrown into prisons.
  • Wayne T... Chris 2012/08/28 14:20:06 (edited)

I totally agree that it should be legalized but I don't think people should be blind to any possible adverse health effects.
I would also say that cannibis is alot less harmful than tobacco and a more milder drug than alcohol is.

Complete BULLSH*T !!! There are more educated skilled/professions that are cannabis users out there than you can imagine. Because it has been illegal for over 80 yrs, most adult users were/are in the CLOSET about their cannabis use. I have been partaking regularly for over 40 yrs (since 14), I have supported myself since 17, raised a son, built my own house, had 2 very rewarding careers, owned 2 businesses, was the Regional Video Conferencing Engineer for North America for one of the largest oil companies in the world and can fix/repair almost anything. We have been lied to for years, there is plenty of legitimate research available on the many uses of cannabis including medical. The last 25 yrs I have used it to treat the many symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis that are not controllable by any other medications. It is legal for Medical Use in 17 States, Washington DC and 7 more have pending legislation for this year. Colorado, Washington and Oregon have on the November ballot to legalize it for personal use for persons over 21. Free the Weed, Plants the Seeds, EDUCATE !!!
