People usually have an idea of what constitutes poverty based on their personal expieriences. There have been times in my life when I haven't had enough money for food or electricity but I've never been homeless, I was hungry, but not starving to death, cold, but not dying of hypothermia. Although I was in a bad situation I was still grateful to have a roof over my head. Then there are some people who think that not having enough money to buy a new pair of shoes or an ipad makes them poor because they've never had to go without anything at all before. I don't think you can really understand what it feels like to go without the things that most people take for granted until you've had to.

Does a person need to have been rich to understand the rich?

Think about that, as all you liars who claim to be rich, are sinking in unpayable debt, that you created, and trying to make poor people pay.

    I think so.

Unless you have been in the situation where you have to decide if you are going to feed your children or pay the bills because you simply do not have the money to do both then you do not know what real worry is.

Absolutely. It is like anything else. Until we have walked in those shoes we have no idea what it is like.

Kind of, I think so. People born into money, often times just don't "get it" and that's not a knock on them, it just is, what it is. That can apply to a lot of situations though, poverty, racism, disability, and so on.

No, some people have compassion. It probably helps though.

    No.
Being poor has its limitations and it can be tough, I suppose if you have experienced tough times you will have more insight into how being poor effects people.
What angers me right now is how the poor are somehow deemed less worthy because they are poor. It is insulting how some very wealthy and powerful people dismiss others as lazy and less worthy because they are out of work or struggling. In a time when a lot of people are struggling it makes no sense to kick people when they are down.
Right now in the UK we keep hearing how the poor are lazy and undeserving. Some poltiicians not only view poor people less worthy but also people who work in other professions. We seem to be seeing a class war and it is nauseating.

it doesn't hurt but really it just takes being able to truly SEE the poor with an open heart not just throw money at them because it's the civilized thing to do

It depends on the person. Some people empathize more readily and easily than others. Does a person have to have been rich to understand the fiscally wealthy?

Not necessarily. Common sense and a certain level of empathy does quite a lot.

The old saying goes something like this; "you must walk a mile in a man's shoes to truly understand his journey." And it's something I believe in.

It's hard to really understand it's helps a little to have been poor at least then you can see what they have to go through just to survive in this world.Just my thought.

Understand? No. But, they can still have empathy, still work to fill needs, still treat the poor as human beings. But I don't think you can really understand poverty until you've walked through it. I don't have much, but I still have more than 90% of the people on this planet.

This is a hard question. I think that if you had not experienced something first hand, it is hard to really that perspective. I am sure one could try to imagine what it is like... but they could never fully know. A lot of times being poor, you go into survival mode. I could never imagine the things I have done or thought had I not experienced these things myself. Just wanting a hot meal and a warm blanket. Looking for a place to sleep where no one will bother you. I know what that is like. That demeaning feeling of digging through trash to find something to eat. Showers. That is what I missed the most when I was on the street. The luxury of washing my hair.

Made me stronger. I had my 2 month old son with me. There where some kind souls that would help out once in a while. One lady gave me vitamins so my milk would be good. It was a sweet gesture, and he at least was getting pretty good nourishment.

No, but the experience gives a person survival training of a different kind. I mean I know how to eat real cheap, how to mix things like powdered milk and regular milk to make more. How to find food banks, donation places, and all kinds of cheap things.

I don't know, I lived on food pantries and the salvation army for a few years, but even I think it would be audacious of me to suggest I know how a starving child feels, or anybody else for that matter. I only know what my life is like and try my best to sympathize with others.
