Its called a parasitic twin.It happens all the time people go their whole lives and dont know they have things like that.In school we learned about tons of cases where they find body parts in a person during autopsy.

"fetus in fetu" pretty gross, but survival of the fittest at work. The stronger/dominant twin absorbs the weaker twin. Happens more than we know, but sometimes, weird crap like this shows up.

I 'm interested to know how this doctor discovered this anomaly! I wonder how many other cases like this have slipped through the cracks until the child either died of complications or grew older with some kind of handicap?

It may sound strange but its not entirely uncommon. It is likely thanks to twin absorption. This happens when twins are concieved but instead of developing independently, one twin literally absorbs the other. But since cell differentiation has already taken place by that point, parts of the other, absorbed twin, continue to grow inside the other twin.

An unfortunate situation to be sure... usually it comes in the form of dentition in the brain (that is how i originally learned of it, reading a story in a medical journal about a guy who was having siezures and unexplained headaches. When they did the original CT they thought he had a tumor but when they got in there to excise the tumor they found teeth.

As a side note, Stephen King actually wrote a story, The Dark Half, about this kind of situation (of course he took many liberties).
