I use a prepaid card to make my purchases off the net. For that very reason it might be slightly paranoid but better safe than sorry.

No, just keep an eye on the balance, make sure no one else is making charges to your account and pay it off at the end of each month. Really not that hard to do. Maybe those brain dead individuals (democrats to those of you living in rio linda ) have a hard time doing that.

I dont worry, I don't use internet for purchase, easy ... it used to be safe until it got swamped with desperado types and fools selling rubbish. Its now worse than door to door salesmen selling polish, vacuum cleaners and insurance !!!

Not that much because I don't purchase much on line and only on sites I normally use that have security in place. I have six security software programs I use but no one is immune from identity theft unless your programmer.

First, I don't use a _credit_ card to make purchases on the Internet; I use a bank debit card on an account with strictly limited funds available at any one time. Why? Because the bank I use offers the same protections credit card companies do, but the folks there also watch out for customers better than credit card companies do, because

    1. It's a local, employee-owned bank
    2. They know their customers by name and by sight--the employees are members of our neighborhoods, go to our churches, their kids attend schools with our kids, etc.

Besides, the head teller is my next door neighbor, and she knows what kinds of purchases I make out of that account (and I'm very glad she does), will raise my personally-set per-purchase limit with a phone call or even a holler next door telling her I plan on a particular purchase, and if I forget and attempt a major purchase that exceeds the per-purchase limit _I_ set, the bank calls and makes sure it's OK. Other employees there are former students of either myself or my wife, are clients (or former, now that I'm cutting back) of mine, etc. (Yeh, I'm OK with them knowing I buy lots of electronics, software, books and music. *heh* I also have very good home security, in addition to good neighbors, so extended knowledge about my purchase habit...

AND, I never save credit card info on a site, always practice "good enough" computer security, never make purchases from public networks, etc. (lots of other minor things--like "better than your average passwords" in the 64-character range, for one example--in addition to make things a bit more secure).

I use reasonable security and the Visa card I use on line is a prepaid card that only has enough money on it to cover the purchases.

Most of the credit card companies offer multiple levels of fraud prevention and consumer protection. It's the only way I'll buy airline tickets.

But not as worried as I used to be. Some people keep a credit card (with a small balance) just to use online. It's relatively 'isolated' from the rest of a person's finances or financial information.

Still, there are some pieces of information which should NEVER be used online. An SSN is just one example.

    You must be VERY careful!
    Scammers are out there waiting.
I use a special debit card account in a separate bank for such purchases.
    They can't harm me.
