Do You Work Better in Silence or With Moderate Background Noise?

According to a recent study, moderate background noise may actually be more conducive to creative thinking than total silence.

Ravi Mehta, a business administration professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and two of his colleagues explained to TIME:

“For individuals looking for creative solutions to daily problems, such as planning a dinner menu based on limited supplies or generating interesting research topics to study, our findings imply that instead of burying oneself in a quiet room trying to figure out a solution, walking out of one’s comfort zone and getting into a relatively noisy environment (such as a cafe) may trigger the brain to think abstractly, and thus generate creative ideas.”

When trying to solve problems, we often avoid the distraction and disruption of noise. But apparently, a certain degree of “disfluency” or “processing difficulty” is good for us. By disrupting our normal thinking patterns, moderate background noise can spur abstract thinking and creativity.

But don’t go seeking out too much of a good thing. “A high level of noise . . . impairs creativity by reducing the extent of information processing.”

What about you SodaHeads? Do you work better in silence or with moderate background noise?

Background noise or some music. I get edgy in utter silence...

too much noise stresses me out. too little noise stresses me out. a happy medium would be some Beethoven playing in the background.

The nature of my work requires me to concentrate 100% all the time. I've tried many times to work with music and Chinese conversations in background, and found that my productivity drops drastically. At least, I'm glad that one of these - I can control.

When it comes to art, bring on the music.

Depends on what I'm doing. If I'm trying to take a test or really focus on something difficult & important, then I don't want any noise. For everything else, bring on the music!

Completely depends on my mood and focus level. That is all. Sometime I need noise, other times absolute silence. Other times silence/nothing with music (background otherwise is unproductive).

I spent 11 years in the Main Control Room at Fermilab. There were always various beeps, tones, alarms and people talking as we worked. One of our "work horse" accelerators (originally the Main Ring then the Main Injector) would inject beam ramp it up and then extract it every couple of seconds. There was an audible tone that played with a pitch based on intensity (higher intensity, higher pitch). It gave us a great and quick input into how things were running in general. Missed a pulse or heard a low pulse you knew something was wrong. Every shift...all night long...beep....beep....beep.....

Thing is you got used to it. Eventually you even MISSED it when it wasn't there. Ever since then I cannot work at all in total silence.

I have to listen to brown noise through headphones in order to read or study anything in a busy environment. And people can be so obnoxious. Sometimes I'd like to slap them across the back of the head and tell them to shut up or get out.

Especially when I'm trying to take a test and the jerks that finish before me can't shut up. I'm glad I'm not in school anymore.

If I'm reading a book, I demand silence, but other than that, nice sounding music gets me going.

If I read in total silence I will literally forget everything I just read within seconds of finishing. I feel like with noise in the background it makes me want to concentrate on what I'm doing.

Women do better with sound while they work because they can actually do more than one thing at a time. Men are single-minded, they can't handle any distractions while they are trying to concentrate. We're just "wired" differently, ask any Mother.
