I guess in my parents generation, they believed in a lot of things our era doesn't think about. For example, if you watch NFL fans back in the 60s, everyone wore suits and hats and went to the games. In fact, I think we dressed better back in the day. And then here comes the late 60s and 70s and it changed things in our country.
Now that I'm older, I think that some things (traditions) in the past were good, and I wish our youth would follow some of the examples of those in the past.
I think my father thought that if a man didn't wear a watch, he had no concept of time and is a "care free" person. Now today, I don't agree with it, but it is interesting that the older generation belived that.
I agree, our elders did things differently for reasons that were right for them...thats just the way things were and i also wish that many of what they believed still excisted in this generation. I remember my grandfather taking us to the beach on a very hot day,us kids in bathing suits and him wearing...slacks,shirt&tie and dress shoes. We felt bad for him being on the beach dressed like that but it didnt seem to phase him one bit.
Race is NOT a factor, but I'm just curious... are you African-American? I'm wondering if this is something that was held closer in the Black community.
Do me a favor. When you go to a job interview, especially after you finish college, purchase a simple watch and wear it.
People who do not wear watches are bosses BIGGEST pet peeves. I understand that technology has changed things, but basic customary things like wearing a suite, shinned shoes, and wearing a watch will NEVER go out of style.
Ah, I forgot about other professions. I'm an IT Engineer, but you as a dancer probably do not need to wear a watch. :) What kind of dance do you perform?
I do ballet but I also love hip-hop. So either of those would make me happy. I think it would also be fun to be a backup dancer for a singer but those jobs are really few and far between.
I believe that you can do anything you set your mind and heart to. Please do NOT let anyone steal your dream of becoming a dancer.
Hey, look at it as a challenge that it is hard to become a backup dancer. If you really work hard at it, YOU WILL succeed.
Another real important piece of advice. Network. Go out and find someone that is an accomplished dancer. Let them mentor you, give you advice. Don't take advice from people who has never been in the business.
Finally, stay away from negativity. Loathe it! Negative vibes can destroy dreams.
Not for many years. SInce I started carrying phones that tell the time, and tell it more accurately than a watch. Watches felt uncomfortable on my wrist. But for what it's worth, I still find myself looking at my wrist sometimes, then having a chuckle with myself. Conditioning I guess.
I own over 40 watches, but this one is my favorite:
