Do You Use Regular Checkout or Self-Checkout?

One hour? C'mon.
This ranks up there with Obama telling us that the banks contribute to lower employment by using ATM's - the companies employs more people than banks lost to the machines -- and the convenience of banking almost anytime of the day is bad?
Dunno - I go to my store and they have the same amount of people employed as they did before they had the machines - and that was when times were better.
I know, cause I work there.

How did this get to an attack against the president? Plus, where is your source for the ATM machines companies? Are they in this country? And do their salaries compare to those of people working in banks?

The banks and the ATMs are a perfect example of the perils of "do it yourself". The banks introduced ATMs because they planned to reduce staff AND make money by all those charges.

I don't know where you live or where your store is - but I have a hard time believing that YOUR store would introduce check-out machines and STILL have as many people employed - when the three markets around here have less humans, but more machines.

It didn't have an option for both, but that's what my answer is. If I go real early on a Sunday morning and the cashier hasn't arrive, I'll check out and bag my groceries myself. I like doing it until you get an error and I'm not sure how to fix it.

I only use the self checkout when I have a few items. Those machines can be annoying at times.

I prefer to use the self-checkout, because it tends to be faster.

I did use self-checkout once, and screwed things up! Then, I began to think that checking out is the store's responsibility....so, let them do it!

I dont work for the store...its not my job to check myself out...just like gas stations....what ever happen to the gas attendants ....think of all the jobs that could be had if they put attendants back at the stations....and dont say it would increase the price of gas....cause the price of gas didnt go down when they fased out the attendants....

Depends how much I have. If a few items, self-checkout. If a cart-full, regular.

The main reason for high unemployment in this country is the fact that machines are taking over the jobs from people. How about the tape recordings that answer the phone whenever you call a large conglomerate, like an insurance company? A machine will make YOU obsolete, and your lost salary, like all the other lost salaries, will go into the pocket of the C.E.O. who designed these self check-out machines!

What CEO who designed those machines? That was the brainchild of some lower paid person, who because he / she designed it on "company time", doesn't even hold the patent. But, the CEO and a whole bunch of already rich guys on the Board of Directors will divy up the profits accrued.

So then this C.E.O. and a bunch of his buddies will be responsible for the end of civilization as we know it, as a mob on starving, unemployed workers will burn down their mansions. Viva La France.

#1, Like the thought but remember it took France forever to get over the revolution, and in the meantime they abused every other nation (remember Haiti?) and still aren't the most pleasant peoples on the planet.

#2, unfortunately, the really rich will have already escaped to their island hideaways, surrounded by their armies of mercenaries. The rest of us won't even have the money to buy the missiles to get to them.

I don't like the self checkout system.
1) Wea are paying the wages of the shop assistants and self checkouts are costing their jobs.
2)If I am to check the goods out myself I should be given a discount because the store isn't paying someone else to do it for me.
3) I prefer to be served rather than have to serve myself.
4) The blooming things always throw up some sort of problem so that I seem to spend longer at a self checkout desk than I do at a staffed one.

Clerks can do some fast bagging, I'll give them that. However, my county started a bag tax (5c for every plastic or paper bag) and so I usually don't use bags.

I like self check out. Not quite sure why, but I do.

Self-Checkouts are a pain in the six... and for you non military types, a pain in the ass.

I try to use regular checkout so they get to keep their job.

I aways like to look the cashier in the eye. I don't trust a machine.

This is another question that can't really be answered with just one answer. I use self checkout when I'm in a hurry and don't have a lot of items, but use regular checkout when I"m doing a large weekly shopping trip.

Help keep Americans employed.

I waste time with most purchases as a customer service rep usually has to enter a code for some purchases. A clerk alone can runs a dozen items through and get thembagged while the self-checkout is still thinking.

I like the personal interaction.

But if you have difficulty with it, please go to the regular checkout.

Maybe if they gave me a discount to make up for the staff that they were saving money by not employing someone to check me out. Otherwise I am using the regular checkout.

I'm usually a bit faster than them, oddly enough.

Both really, it just depends on the lines. If there is somebody who doesn't get along with technology trying to use the self checkout, it's best to avoid it.

I'll use the self thing if I have a few things;otherwise, no.

Do not want to take anyone's job....use checkout

Sometimes it can be nice to check out on your own so you can do it quickly, but honestly, I enjoy the interaction with the cashier and almost every time I try to use a self-checkout scanner it malfunctions.

Having worked as a cashier myself I know that self-checkout actually takes soooo much longer due to the computer systems involved. I can't stand self-checkout even though I know all the produce PLUs by memory.
