There has been a question lately about wealthy kids that earn scholarships. Should they keep them even though they've earned them, or give them back so another kid that is not wealthy should get to have it? What do you think? scholarships

Those students didn't WIN anything they EARNED. Those students kept up their grades, likely in weighted classes, they partisapated in community service (there are no scholarships which do not require this) they very likely also had a very active extra cirruclictural routine (most scholarships require that a student have vast experence in the art/field the scholarship sponsors aka volenteering at city hall for a political science scholarship) and the students took the time to meet the requirements of the scholarship (writing a essay, collecting recomendation letters and sponsors).

What the heck is wrong in this world were we want to punish people for being successful? If the student did the work the student should get the rewards.

And has even one person answering this question even thought that maybe the students' families are the ones who have forced this on the student? Did any of you think the parents didn't want there children growing up thinking everything would be handed to them on a silver platter? The parents said to the student "you want to go to college you do it like we did it YOU find the way". just because a parent is "wealthy" doesn't mean they want their children to grow up without work ethic and the ability to be self relient?

Some scholarships are earned by essays i.e., and others are won, like in a drawing. What matters if the wealthy kids should give up these scholarships even if they won and/or earned them.

I don't think it's the parents of the wealthy child, but the parents of those not wealthy as well as the popular media that has been putting pressure.

    Thanks.

what "scholarships" are "won". I have been filling them out for my students for years and now for my own daughter and even myself so I can go back to school. Not a single one that I have seen, not one seen by any of my fellow teachers is attained though a "drawing" I know some clubs like BPOE and Elks have "prize" money that is supposed to be used for school but those are not scholarships those are prizes.

Sure there are. Some are like contests, and the best entry wins; Greeting card companies and other sponsors offer them.
I see them on FastWeb all the time.

THEY have the money??? I think you are mistaken. The PARENTS might have the money but that is not their money. And why should a family have to use their resources to pay for a childs education? There are millions YES millions of scholarships and grants availble that go un applied for each year totalling more than a BILLION in "free" money.

Those students who apply and then MEET ALL REQUIREMENTS should not have to feel bad for "taking" something from someone who is precieved as "more needy"

Really? So a parent works all their lives to be secure in their life and they have to suddenly put a second mortage on their house and drain their savings?

There are literary billions of dollars in unclaimed scholarship funds each year that NO ONE applies for. And why don't those students who would NEED that money apply? Most because they do not want to have to work to meet the requirements for thsoe scholarships. Grades are rarely the determiningfactor and many scholarships do not care at all what the grades of the student in high school are. But they do require students to write essays, do community service, be willing to study a certain major or be active in the major as an extra curricular activity.

No one is keeping the needy students from getting to college but the students themselves who are not willing to put in the time and effort to apply for the money.

being "smart" is sometimes part of earningthe scholarship in the first place. Most students in high school who actually APPLY for them are A students and are A students in weighted classes. They are also student who are active in the community (scholarships require letters of recomendation and sponsorships) and in extra curricular activities.

ANY student who wants a scholarship only needs to get online and start a search. There is billions of dollars in unclaimed scholarship funds each year that no one applies for. Wealthy families with SMART children know to look for them that is why they are rich they are smart

what about them they can do the reseach as well and get the same kind of money there is more than enough scholarship money out there. One student this years was given 30k for a voice recorded essay. she won sure but only 100 people applied. 30k and 100 people applied the same group also gave out 15 10K scholarships so 16% of those who applied got something big.
Students with money and without have the SAME chance at the scholarships and there are enough of them that they do not have to compete.
Heck my own child got one for her bowling legue activity and she only got it because NO ONE else applied of 47 kids who were eleigible 1 applied.

did you know that in america they do foot ball scholarships so that rich and sporting morons can have a free ride while a guy with a I.Q of over 150 has to work three different jobs to get in the same position
    true story

if the kid has a 150 IQ then he has the means to get a full ride as well... the problem is and you don't understand this because you do not work in education that 150 IQ doesn't translate into good grades or complient behavior. MOST often very gifted students are part of the "at risk" groups. they get to secondary and they sputter out. refuse to preform to do even the littlest work refuse to give teachers a chance to see what they might have so they leave school without a transcript that shows solid preformance in weighted classes but with a record of disruptive behavior and unrelieability which no one wants to support with money.

Athletic scholarships are for those involved in sports they are supported by alumni they have totally different requirements if that kid with 150 IQ joined a sports team, tennis swiming, hell cheerleading he would be able to access those funds and would likely as a very smart kid beable to get it because sports scholarships require a GPA of at least 2.9 or better that is a C+ avareage.

But they seperate sports and acidemic scholarships to give those who are not to brainy a chance... why should only the very book smart kids get to go to college talent should count it should be rewarded

I actually do not disagree with you I wouldn't mind taking sports from teh grade schools and if a parent wants a student involved they can join a rec center. PE should be there but ...

But that is not going to happen and if you lose high school and college sports then many students will lose all incentive to go to school past the mandated age which in some states is a low as 13. Sports keep kids in school and sports opens doors for those who are not smart book wise.

As well what pool would professional teams draw from then? Rec centers not likely do you simply want all sports to fade away... if that's teh case then you must also want a great many people to lose their jobs everyone from teh athlete to teh grounds keepers to teh venders to the announcers and sports writers all go on welfare then what people have no past times to enjoy not leisure activites no way to blow of steam....

the point of university is to further careers though advancement of talents and that means ALL talents from those on the field to those in the lab

On the rare occasion one of these wealthy kids truly earns something, instead of just getting it handed to them you want them to give it back?

Personalty I'm happy to see a kid who could have been handed everything earn it, what kind of lesson would that be if it was then taken away, and paid for anyway

It' would be telling him standing on your own and accomplishing something is not only unnecessary it makes people mad

After all with billions of dollars in scholarship money going unclaimed each year if these kids didn't apply for at least some of them who would?

How about this, they advertise them more. I have been seeing ads for food stamps trying to get more people on them. Instead let's advertise for scholarships. If they are going to give it away anyway it may as well be for something worthwhile.

Believe it or not MOST corps do advertise... they just target teh advertisements to people in the eductaional field. they come in teachers supply cats and in newsletters... I have yet to get a good answer as to why teachers do not getteh word out to their students. I start telling my students freshman year start applying... just google a corp like coke or pepsi and find the scholarships they are offering

There are actually very few "need" based scholarships. Most scholarships are based on what the student plans to study. AKA you can get a scholarship from Coke-A-Cola if you plan to major in business and distrubution as an example
There are also billions in unclaimed funds each year that no one applies for.

There is no arguement for a student from a wealthy family not taking a scholarship they applied for and got by filling all the requirements. Not when you look and find the billions of unclaimed scholarship moneys that all those "less economically advantaged" students never bothered to apply for.
