Do you think the old Penal Colony option could be reintroduced?

So we hear over and over again about the ever skyrocketing cost to state and federal authorities to maintain the prison and jail systems in the United States. Not to mention the overcrowding problems which continue to plauge them. They can't get a prison or jail built before it's already overcrowded. Before the first inmate is ever allowed in the door even!
It just got me to wondering if they would start entertaining ideas of just establishing a penal colony somewhere. Where they could just drop them off and not have to spend the money to take care of them anymore.
And yeah, I just got through watching Escape from New York.

Recently I read that Australia was once a penal colony of Great Britan. Of course, we know that the US was the recipient of many outlaws. This could be something to look into. and, also isn't Gitmo a penal colony? We could actually use a space shuttle and send some to, well, maybe Pluto?

Gitmo is a prison. Penal colonies don't hace cells n stuff. Just kick em out, drop off some food every now and then and otherwise let em fend for themselves with whatever they can find.

If I'm not mistaken, Georgia or Florida (maybe both together as they were both claimed by Spain to start out with.)also started out as a Spanish penal colony in the begining.

They scrapped the space shuttle. Besides it did'nt even carry enough fuel to make it to the moon. But I guess we could tell em to hitch-hike the rest of the way. Haha

Yep, you are right. Gitmo is a prison. Do penal colonies still exist?

Yeah, but then there would be a major transportation issue. I was thinking more along the lines of somewhere in the desert or and island. Or maybe Mississippi! Haha!

OK, If anybody is from Mississippi I apologize. I live in Arkansas and we gotta find somebody to rag on. Besides Alabama is too far away.

Long as you're not sending 'em to Missouri, I'm with you. :O)

Maybe one of those huge ice floes that's broken off of Greenland. I don't think they're considered the property of any particular country, unless they drift out of international waters.
