Both, my opinions focused mainly on teenagers as I am one myself and I have realised social compliance plays a huge role when one is out in public with friends because they wan't to fit in or act like somebody they are not to impress friends however privately and around family its personal expression because they are comfortable and don't feel they are been judged, social media don't help many teens feel confident enough to be unique and original because they feel pressured to be a certain weight, wear a specific top etc and its pressure they don't need at all as I have experienced

Both. Often times people dress a way because they are not only comfortable in it, and like it, but also because they fit in. But you don't have to dress the part to fit in. I stick out like a sore thumb in my group.

I prefer to do it for personal expression, but I don't mind complying if it will give me a head up in some area.

I think that it is a combination of personal expression and social compliance... To some fashion is more personal expression and less social compliance. To others fashion is more social compliance and less personal expression ;-)

Personal Expression because it shows who you are(Even though you shouldn't judge a book by its cover) It's the best way to see what that person likes. (If they wear what they like to wear.)

It should be about personal expression, but unfortunately, so many brainlessly follow so-called "fashion." I think you should dress to reflect yourself. Why let others dictate what you wear?

I think it depends on age and how much self expression you were okay with when you were younger.

Personal expression, but there are some boundaries (like Lady Gaga's meat dress). People should wear what they want to wear, not what's popular with the rest of the world.

I think is a variety of identification with a group: fashion movement, profession, socio-economic status, sub-culture and even occasion. Its an outward expression of ones identity.

Haha, I've had my share of that when I was younger XD and I live in a fairly religious town too. But the great thing was that while we (me and my mates) stood out, we weren't social outcasts.

I would like it if it could be about personal expression, but most often it is about social compliance. We can all use fashion to express ourselves to a degree, but in the workplace, for instance, We have to follow the dress code.

Honenstly I think it's a bit of both. Social norms play a large role in what we wear. That said there are those who express themselves through their clothing. Most guys wear the same thing especially during the warmer months; t-shirt cargo shorts and flip flops. But male doesn't really provide for many options. Women typically go for t-shirt, skinny jean and ballet flats or flip flops. Women's fashion provides for a larger variety and as such the dregree of deviance will be elevated.

All that said there are also individuals whose style of dress clearly reflect who they are.

The idea that wearing certain things define who you are is absurd in itself because you yourself is not the one who decided certain clothing depict certain things. Someone else did it for you and you're following suit. In the end, clothing can never be used to truly express oneself. The more one follows fashion, the more one follows suit. Which is ironic because people think fashion is linked to originality.

There's probably hundreds if not thousands wearing the exact same shirt, if not similar clothes that you're wearing right now.

It should be about personal expression, but people tend to wear clothes because of social compliance. Personally I wear what I wear because I saw it, liked it and it's comfortable.

Probably a bit of both... and designer expression.
There is certainly a desire to fit in with some niche, though, even if it's "individuality".

Some people think they've got to dress a certain way to fit in, and look down on other people for being different, I'm one of the people who they look down on cos i wear what i like and listen to the music I like, the two dont necessarily have to match.. you dont need to look like jesus to listen to metal. So for me personally its self expression but there are many out there who are too easily caught up with whats popular within the media and claim to be expressing themselves when they're really just complying with an image portrayed by the media..and people like me suffer because of how much control the media has over their views

Fashion is both and neither. Compliance? Are we wearing uniforms? There is a level of social conformity that is acceptable or beneficial in certain aspects of life. Social expression is acceptable but not a right. The cloths you wear are not like speech. It is perfectly acceptable for a school system to require a dress requirement. A classroom is a place to learn not a fashion stage for you and your friends.
