Mental illness almost always takes YEARS to set in. If you've ever had a relative die of Alzheimer's, you know how extreme and horrifying these diseases can be.

It's certainly possible if drug induced or due to a chemical imbalance in the brain, but most people who are mentally ill have a long history of abnormal behavior. The sad part is that it is usually unreported, ignored, or people who could intervene "don't want to get involved." Sadly, many people who are dangerous to themselves or others never receive the help they need until it's too late.

I think mental illness comes on slowly and almost imperceptibly until one day people notice. Mental trauma can occur in a split second.

Those who go through great emotional trauma can become emotionally ill. It's called shock, PTSD, Catatonia, etc.

No. It takes a little while to become mentally ill.
However, all it takes is the wrong combination of events, or stimulating factors, real or imagined for a quietly festering mental illness to produce a "breakdown".
Which is to say you can "snap" all in one day.

I think they can keep it hidden pretty good until something triggers them to go off the deep end.

People can 'snap' though, I believe, and feel or appear mentally ill temporarily.

There is the issue of temporary insanity where something can result in the death of one or many victims depending on circumstance.

sure it could happen in one day but the initial reasoning for any kind of self inflicted mental illness has to have deeper roots pertaining to strong memories. so the seed might hav been planted long ago and could never see whats going on under the ground till it sprouted. i hope i understood the question right and didnt just bable sum useless information

Maybe if somebody took a butch of acid and had a really bad trip, but without drugs or had a severe concussion I don't think so. Remember though you are deemed mentally ill if you don't agree with certain mainstream views. Lots of people labeled crazy really aren't they just say something that the majority of people don't agree with or dislike. Most people who are really mentally ill become that way from drug abuse or sometime of traumatic experience they can't recover. I will say if a person was born in the wild and grew up in the wild people would deem them mentally ill which I find sort of funny with a lot people today so obsessed with nature and wanting everything to be natural.

It’s rare, but it can happen. Mental illness can be caused by any of a number of things, including exposure to certain chemicals.

    Yep. Just as I said.

The specific mental illness that is usually behind these acts of random killing sprees is called “hypermania.” It can be caused by any of a number of things, including a blow to the head (as was almost certainly the case for Andrew Kehoe, perpetrator of what is still the worst ever school massacre in U.S. history, whose body count matched that of Columbine and Virginia Tech combined — and most of his victims were elementary school children!), brain tumor (Charles Whitman, the Texas University Tower Sniper of 1966), etc., but these days far and away the most common cause is as a known side-effect of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant pharmaceuticals such as Prozac®, Luvox®, Zoloft®, etc. Improper withdrawal from them is even more likely to trigger hypermania than the use of them is.

If they are given certain drugs and another program that I won't go into on here, they can be induced to have mental illness

The signs of mental illness are there, but sometimes, you don't see them, except in retrospect. Some people who are truly mentally ill are very good at hiding it. Also, there are other mental problems, like varying degrees of sociopathic personality, which are also hidden from those around them. Sociopaths can be extremely charming outwardly, but the flaw is that they find nothing wrong in hurting other people, provided there is something in it for them.

It is an evolution. Things can develop from just slightly disturbed to the point of no return but there are many instances in between that parents, teachers or friends could have noticed that something was not alright and could have intervened either by medicines or hospitalization. Unfortunately, too often people with mental issues tend to isolate themselves from their families/friends exacerbating their mental conditions until one day they snap.

That's a broad topic. I would say no, but there are so many different types of mental illnesses such as personality disorders as opposed to psychological disorders and whether or not drugs and alcohol were a factor in the progression of the illness.
