There most certainly is a "genetic" predisposition to care for our young, and it is pronounced in women. I would have said "yes" to this, not to "one gene". That is not how genes work.

I believe God made women just the way He wanted them. To produce and give birth and then to nurture the offsping to maturity.

some woman are too self centered, ignorant and lack the compassion and intellect to be a good mother from my experience watching my ex look after her kid

Some people are just naturally good mothers while others are horrible. It is who they are.

But, it is probably more than one gene, working in tandem. I believe, at least one of those genes is the FOSB one, as well as Peg1/Mest and Peg3. When any of these were turned off in mother mice, their pups would be absolutely ignored, and would end up dying of neglect, when normally mother mice would corral their young and clean and tend to them. Interestingly, the latter genes are paternally expressed in children. They affect the management of Oxytocin, which, of course, is a bonding chemical, released in order to form bonds between a mother and child, or a woman and a man, etc.

Of course, there's probably a few other things that help to make a woman maternal, but I am certain genes are part of it. I have been maternal since I was little, and still am.

You know I think there is because I know some women who have just abandoned their children weather for drugs, other men, fun, whatever. I never understood the mindset and never will. I have met some incredibly bad mothers in my day also. I'm not sure if they are missing a gene or just have no heart or no brains. Your guess is as good as mine. I don't know how I checked the wrong box but, I did.

I hate limited yes or no questions. I believe the maternal instinct is a product of environment and experiences.

i agree ,and would also like to add,if something is physically part of you for 9months .and only kept alive because of you and is now in this world with you ,it would seem to me to be extremely hard not to be maternal towards that part of you .As a man i could not even imagine what that feels like ,is that feeling the mom gene ?

MOTHERS ARE VERY IMPORTANT... Society would be at a huge loss with them.

I believe that a mom gene is probable.

Assuming the mom gene is as stated by science, if a woman who has a child or children doesn't have this gene, I hope that her income level will support a nanny who has the gene for the sake of the child.

The last thing America needs are unwanted children growing up smart but emotionally challenged or emotionally insane raising h*ll in society. For example,

-President Obama (really believes that Capitalism equals Racism, as well as, believes in Prosperity for the Middle East minus Israel, along with Mediocrity for the USA).

-Gay Rights movement (only 1% have a physical problem making them gay where the rest are emotionally insane, confused about life, or want a free government handout).

-ACLU (taking civil rights to an insane level where it doesn't belong).

-The highly intelligent guy who opened fired in a theater playing a Batman movie, etc.

-Radicals in the Middle East who have grown up brainwashed at a young age that their God is more important than their mothers, family, their own existence. For example, the USA will kill to protect their physical families and the land they protect where God is a part of the whole.... The radicals in the Middle East kill to protect t...

I don't think it's genetic, but I definitely think some people are more adapted to motherhood due to environmental circumstances. It's definitely something psychologists should look into in terms of research.

Some women are just made to be mommies. I was but my best friend wasn't, she isn't mommy material at all. It just all depends on who you are.

Its more of a morals thing than genes. Some women have had wonderful parents but turned out to be terrible at parenting and vice versa. It's in you or it isn't.

Mom gene!? Women have the mommy game all wrapped up! They're set up with the equipment, so no wonder they would have the gene, a gene, some gene, how ever you want to play with that. Just be careful with any discussion with her during the pregnancy, jeez, can that go blow up in your face!

I believe not since as the world has shown there are mothers that are not maternal and abandon their child -not talking about adoption at all- and some that are indifferent to their child.
So if it is genetic some women are not born with it

I've seen fathers way more maternal than mothers as well .......so again i don't think its genetic just something that is in the person

The impulse to have sex and procreate is genetic but the desire to be a parent is more of a meme than a gene. I'd say it has a lot to do with the personalities of your parents growing up that effects your view of parenting in general and your self image which effects how you think and feel about your own children, even before you have them.

There's a genetic predisposition to maternity/paternity, but it isn't caused by a single gene. If a single gene could alter an organism single-handedly, we would see much more cases of, say, cancer from genes mutating than we do.

Instead, genetics usually involves genes coupling up with other genes to amplify their influence on the organism. Aging, for example, is the result of every gene in an organism's genome shaving themselves, orchestrated by a group of genes related to cell maintenance.

Many factors go into being a caring mother or not, it is not genetic. Some men are much more nurturing than some women.
