Do you think SH should have an age restriction?

The longer I am here the more I see from teenagers that bother me tremendously. I don't feel they should all be here (I am sorry teens, it's nothing personal). I think SH should have an age restriction, or when we make a poll we can set up age perimeters. I am a firm believer that kids are very impressionable, naive, too trusting and can not make good judgement when up against an adult, especially a conniving adult. As I've told some, I myself have a 15 yr. old daughter. When I read the things these teens are saying, doing & who they are conversing with and in what manner I shudder at the thought of my daughter being on this site, and alone at that. Seeing this daily brings a lot of mixed emotions out, from sadness to anger. I already know I'm sensitive but maybe I'm just too sensitive...?!

    There is an age restriction, 13, I believe. As for teens being here, age is not the issue, the maturity level is. I've seen quite a few adults' comments here that made me wonder if they themselves should be allowed on SH.

    I really think there should be an under 18 restricted section which is monitored by SH to make sure that predators are not trolling. There are too many adults taking advantage of vulnerable, underage teens, and too many underage teens who feel that they've invented sex!

    Yes, yes & yes! Especially on the last part. And that proves my point further. So you've had sex, big whip..how much maturity are you showing by then going and blabbing about it? I mean I had sex when I was a teen (even though I should have waited) but you can believe I wasn't going around telling my dark, deep secrets to anyone who would listen, especially not sharing that info with my elders!

    Most of the people who argue with me on here are schoolkids who've been brainwashed by their liberal PC teachers! The opinions of anyone under 21 are basically irrelevant.

    I disagree on two counts;

    1) Many of the people who engage in the most childish arguments are allegedly middle-aged & older.

    2) Arbitrarily saying that someone's opinion is irrelevant just because of their age is ageist.

    Personally I think that people who advocate and/or excuse rape have irrelevant opinions, but that's just me.

    People would just lie about their age. When you make your account on SodaHead, if you say you're 18, you're 18 as far as anyone is concerned. There really is no way for the mods to verify a users age.

    It wouldn't matter anyway. They could make up their ages. Half of these kids aren't the age they say they are.

    True they can lie about there ages. However most would agree that the way the younger generation writes is a dead give away to their age group.

    they can learn a lot from this site, just shouldn't be able to ask such silly irrelevant questions. There are some very intelligent kids. I think the age limit should start around 15

    Your daughter is probably doing and saying those exact same things, and you just don't know it. Teens are teens. You can't watch their every move or believe that you're keeping them immune to everything. And heck, the more you say no or don't let them act a certain way/speak a certain way/do certain things..... the more they will rebel when you're not watching.
  • MlssCue... MyPaper... 2012/08/06 05:53:42

    Yes, I was waiting for such a person to say my daughter is doing the same things. let me assure you, she is not. Everyone is going to have their own view. I do not keep my daughters in a bubble and protect them from the entire world. I do however, do my job and that is to always ensure their safety to the best of my abilities. Keeping them off of sites like this, is one way of ensuring safety. If your child knows that you are a loving, caring parent & you set the boundaries for their own well being then there is a less likely chance they are going to rebel. No teen is perfect, no person is perfect.

    So in your theory, never say no? Just throw caution to the wind because hey they are going to do it anyway when you say no.

    I generally agree - though I'm not sure how to implement it.

    Whatever it is, I think there should be some mechanism to provide some more separation between adults and minors. There are topics on here that I think are not appropriate for younger audiences and I think there are questions that are asked by younger people and older people should not answer.

    I'm glad you brought this question up - I think it's an important one.

    I find myself checking the age of the poster when I find a question that seems a bit adult or improper. I will regularly just close the question without even responding. If there was a system to allow me to filter these somehow I would certainly appreciate it!

    Some thoughts off the top of my head...

    Questions that I would not want shared with a younger audience are general sexual in nature - but I'd expand that to include topics like drug use.

    Questions that I would not want an adult to respond to a youth on would again include anything sexual, but would also include things like relationships with parents, stuff like am I pretty, and things that place teens in danger like cutting

    I am a bit biased (being 15 myself) but i think teens improve this site a lot, and a lot of us are intelligent. Also it is very easy to lie about your age, so it would be a useless restriction.

    It would be just like other sites, young people lying about their ages. Young people today are not idiots, they are quite wise for their ages. I have been surprised many times at the wisdom in the young. They have so much more access to information we did not at their age. Most 16 year olds could teach us a lot...
  • MlssCue... Dweezle 2012/08/06 05:29:32
    MlssCue =Go Blue=
    Whoa, wait a minute. I never said they were idiots....far from that. I have a 20 yr old, A 15 yr old and a 9 yr old. so I am no stranger to teens and the workings of them....thus this poll. No one will convince me that the kids under 16 should be let free here....I rather enjoy the teens here more than most adults but that doesn't mean that I think they should be subjected to the ignorance of the so called adults on this site.

    there is an age restriction in needing to be 13.... just read the Terms of Use

    and even then it wont help unless they have it were you need an ID like a drivers licence to sign up
