Toy guns these days are not what they were when I was
a kid. Some do everything a real one does, minus firing an
actual bullet. They have ones that have recoil, eject toy
shell casings, slide cocking action, etc.

What are your thoughts on these very realistic toy guns,
and their influence on kids?

Marine Corps General Reinwald was interviewed on the radio some time ago and this is his reply to the woman who interviewed him concerning guns and children. Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you got to love this!!!!

This is a portion of a National Public Radio (NPR) interview between a female broadcast journalist and US Marine Corps General Reinwald who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military installation.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Reinwald, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL REINWALD: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery, and shooting.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?

GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?

GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you're equipping them to become violent killers.

GENERAL REINWALD: Well, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?

The radio went silent and the interview ended.

Today would be a good time to buy and install Trigger Locks, and unless she is an accomplished Lock Picker, she will be safe.

I do not like the idea of toy guns without proper supervision. Children have been shot for brandishing toy guns too many times. I think today more than ever all children should be taught gun safety even with toy guns. When I was child, there were guns in our home. We learned to shoot them with the supervision of our parents. I do not remember a time when I thought it was okay to touch a gun without one of my parents.

I don't think a child should own any toy without supervision, something as simple as a Beach Shovel is nice for making sand Castles, but it still can be used as a deadly weapon.

I understand your main point and agree somewhat. However, I am not sure I have seen the beach shovel capable of inflicting deadly force, but you are right about supervision with certain toys more so than others. As generations pass, the supervision seems to lessen. However, having carried a loaded weapon as a MP, I do know that there is a great difference in the pointing of certain objects period than others. I really do not think I would mistake a beach shovel for a weapon. It is the unknowing innocence of the child in playing cowboy or law officer. Though you are trained to preserve life, your is the one that will often take precedence. There is a shoot first mentality rather than take a chance that it is you that is shot.

I used the Beach Shovel as an example, but if you kicked down a Sand Castle that some six year old had spent hours buildlng, getting whacked up side the head with his shovel could almost be guaranteed, I could have said Baseball Bat or Hockey Stick.
I also at times carried Loaded Firearms (Licensed to Carry) but all I did was let the other person know I was armed, and ready to use if necessary, and no shots were ever needed

I did not disagree with you. I do not have young children of my own and I do not know about the beach shovels. As far as I remember, they looked plastic to me, but I do not profess to know everything. However, what I am pinpointing is the POINTING OF A TOY THAT LOOKS LIKE A REAL GUN in the wrong situation at the wrong time. Again, I got your point. Children need supervision with a lot of toys or just supervision period. I get it. I just CANNOT agree that toy guns in particular do not required more supervision.
p.s. caps are for emphasis only I do not know how to make italic letters :) I raved you both times.

I used to play regularly with toy guns like metal, single-action six shooters that looked almost like real ones except slightly scaled down. I remember one a neighbor friend had called the Fanner 50. It was huge and colored glossy black with pearl handles. Most of these were cowboy type replicas and there weren't many military style ones. We had police style caps guns but you could tell from a distance that they were toys. Bottom line, parents need to be involved in their kid's lives.

I thought they stopped real toy guns awhile back? All the ones I see anymore are green, blue, lights flashing. Not realistic at all. I haven't seen any real looking ones for awhile, but then again my son is 14 so I haven't been toy shopping in a long time.
I know that a kid will make a gun out of anything if that's what he wants. If you take the toy, he/she will use a stick, take the stick, they'll use their fingers. You just have to talk to your kids and teach them right from wrong.

I was a little tomboy and I played with toy guns that looked like the real thing all of the time when I was young..I got my first bb gun when I was 7, my first hunting rifle when I was 8 or 9 and my parents told me never to point a gun at anyone, even the fake guns..I turned out fine, never thought about going "postal" anywhere and I'm a responsible, legal gun owner.. I've never shot anyone that didn't deserve it...

That most kids ( boys and girls) when they reach a certain age should recieve firearms safety training and instruction . Whether from a relative , the local police force ,or a gun club/ organization ( NRA -GOA )doesn't matter. The mystery should be removed and the destructive power shold be demonstrated.

Realistic guns are not a bad influence on kids. But the can endanger kids. Kids have been shot by police mistaking them for real ones. At night in the dark, it's hard to tell the difference, especially if it's being pointed at them and they have to make a split second decision. Toy guns are fine, just make them so that a cop can tell the difference immediately.
