None of the answers are relevant. Police - whether local, county, state or federal - are only as good as the constraints society holds them to.

If bad policing goes unpunished and un-rectified, you will have corruption.

Having such immediate and personal power over ordinary citizens is inherently corrupting (because power itself is inherently corrupting). If police aren't held to exacting standards, then corruption will become the order of the day.

In societies where police corruption is endemic, no citizens are safe from either criminals or the police.

Good police are good for society; however, bad police are bad for society. Corruption exists in every aspect of society, and it is always bad. If we could do away with corruption, what a wonderful world it would be!

Maybe but if everyone thought alike it would stymie inovation way too much.

I don't think it's necessary to think totally alike in order to agree on many things. We are all individuals facing basically the same problems. In today's world so many think it is necessary to cling to or identify with one group and let them tell you what and how to think, but that's really against human nature. That has stymied innovation and progress in more recent years.

I have read studies by scientists who studied liberals and conservatives and how brain activity in both shows why we may never agree. Conservatives use a certain part of the brain more than liberals do and liberal use another part of the brain more than conservatives do. One has to do with fear and another has to do with complex calculations. There is alot more to it then that but I don't have this article in front of me. Next time I find it and I'm on the upstairs computer I will print it out so i have it when I need it. In other words we can't help fighting and argueing with each other because we think so differently. It's not that either side are bad people we just think they are. What is right for one side is see as wrong by the other.

Yes, idealism and fantasy are entertaining and make people feel good, but unfortunately don't work in real life situations. Pragmatism and practicality bring solutions.

But the Ranks of Good Cops are Getting Smaller and Smaller. They are Being Replaced by Thugs and Cowards Who Call themselves Police. Cops Who Raid a House in the Middle of the Night and Kill a Homeowner Trying to Protect His Family Only to Discover they Had the Wrong House, and then they Say "It was Justified". They Kick the Doors in Without Identifying themselves, Because they are too Scared they Might Get Shot Back at. They Have Killed Innocent Men, Old Women and Even Kids "Protecting Themselves". I Call these Police Officers COWARDS !!!!!!!!!! Be Real Men and Women, Get Off of Your Power Trip and Act Like Human Beings, Stop Killing Innocent People You JACKBOOTED THUGS. This Country is becoming a POLICE STATE.

  • Boo Bob 2012/08/14 14:45:03

What part of "the bad people have more of the guns right now" do you not understand?! More armed good people would make the bad people less likely to attempt the commission of crimes on those who are also armed. The police are not able to respond to every situation in time to protect the victims. Therefore, the potential victims need to be able to protect themselves.

Yes i started this question. What a bunch of people think when they see criminals who were beaten up during arrest is that cops did it after handcuffing and arresting the wrong duer not that the person resisted and fought first. People who think all cops are bad piss me off. Sure there are some that abuse their power but for the most part very few do.

    Most are good.
About 6 or 7 chased down my brother and busted his noes and beat him up pretty bad but. . . he had them chase him clear across west Seattle and he was drunk and high at the time. i could like some say "yeah, rotten cops." but hay, my brother was asking for trouble don't ya think?

Most cops I have met have been very decent people and am very happy to have them cruisin' up and down my streets lookin' for "bad guys.".
(even if one of them happen to be . . ..);-/

If they actually performed their job and prtoected the rights of the citizenry I wouldn't have a problem with them. But most of them have become enforcers for the elite if our society. They get away with murder on a regular basis, and they trample the rights of the people constantly. Agree with their politics or not (I don't), but the OWS protests proved this in spades.

And if you doubt what I'm saying, watch any of the slew of videos of the police's actions when the G20 summit was held in Pittsburgh, PA. Then tell me that they aren't working for the elite, and not us.

For the most part they are good.

A few abuse their authority and need to be in a different line of work.

Others just don't do their jobs. Example, failing to prepare reports or follow up on a crime. Good descriptions on the part of a citizen should result in a timely report for the insurance company or apprehension of the miscreant. I'm sure that had it been the mayor's house broken into the information I provided would have been sufficient to bring in the miscreant. However, it was not followed up on and eventually forgotten except by me.

Others do their jobs very well. There are some officers who are a true credit to their uniforms and the badge.

    Evaluate each one based on his or her own character. Like politicians, we certainly should not paint every officer with a tar brush when only certain ones need it. There are good cops;

    Good cop

    and there are bad cops.

    bad cop

There can be NO other answer. Sure we hear of so called brutality but then we hear about all of the protestors and those that defy the law. I for one give them very high marks. Where would we be if the OWS anarchary was allowed to continue and completely take over our communities.

If they were derelect in their duty to help you, sue their asses. If any of them were involved, bring charges and throw said asses in prison.
