They can do have test done and can diagnose problems but when it comes to fixing the problem they must reply on medication. I would suspect that when you are a doctor and dealing with a patient that is very demanding that it would be very tempting to give them what they want if it makes sense but I don't think the majority of doctors do.
A good person to have a rapport with is your local pharmacist. Make an appointment to sit and review your medications with him or her and they can give you good advise on whether or not you should be talking about alternatives with your physician. Of course if you do, you should be prepared to approach your doctor non confrontationally so he/she keeps an open mind during the discussion. A good example of this is that my doctor had me taking lipitor for some time now and my lipids are still not where they should be, so after increasing the dosage once, he then prescribed a second drug to be taken in conjuction because he was concerned that another rise in lipitor would be too risky for my liver. The pharmasist I have been with for years informed me that the liver risks were as high or worse using the combination and and gave me information that my doctor considered and switched me to a single but higher dose lipitor generic, saving me about a hundred dollars a month. All to the same effect.
