Do you think people are selfish if they commit suicide?

I think they are distraught and hopeless or have a terminal illness and want to protect their loved ones from seeing them in pain.

I would add angry. Suicide is a very self-centered act. There may be other motives.

It's an act of pain and desperation. To those at the time, it typically seems like nobody would mind their being gone. It's not a rational state of mind.

Selfish and cowardly, yes.

A person in a suicidal state is not thinking of anyone's interest. They most likely have lost interest in life. Just because their act hurts other people doesn't mean they do it for selfish reasons. That would be bizarre.

No they are not thinking of others when they get that low. Then again since tots. they have been promised a better world in heaven. It is when things get their lowest that you must not quit but it is often hard to convince teens of that.

You feel like you can't take it anymore so you just want to end the suffering, most of the time you feel that the people around you would be better off if you were dead. It is not selfish to want to stop feeling so bad, its selfish of other people to expect you to get on with your life feeling the way you feel.

We see it as selfish, in away it is. But at the end of the day we don't know what they are going through to able to go that far to take their own lives. Depression is not good.

OK I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I'll say why I think it is not.

Imagine being surrounded by happy people who have NO idea how you feel. living every day in pain and suffering from depression while Others tell you to suck it up and don't understand.

Yes, that's exactly how my friend has been feeling :( it's not fair at all. Many people claim they are trying to "help" when really the very thing the person needs is empathy and love, not anger and and ignorance.

But to themselves mostly. Not enough effort put in to finding solutions. I was suicidal once. But no longer. I got the help I needed and fortunately it was valuable.

But its just as selfish, if not more, to ask someone who wants to kill themselves to stay alive for your own happiness simply because you want them there.

I think they are troubled and deeply hurting. I wish they could have found help before taking drastic, final action.

Absolutely! There is nothing more selfish than to take your own life. Although my religion believes in self immolation for a cause, I still believe it to be selfish.

I believe the people who get angry over someone suicide are the selfish ones. Unfortunately, some people are that depressed and/or desperate they kill themselves... its sad!

For the most part...no, because someone who commits suicide may be seriously psychologically impaired. State of mind would have to be considered in any determination.

People who possess suicidal ideation that are extremely depressed are suffering most times from a chemical imbalance in the brain. If they make a plan and carry it out, they are doing it in a mental state other than their own normal mind.

Someone who commits suicide because their significant other left them....is doing it to deliver the big "so there" or "take that".....but once again...they are not in their right mind.. Killing one's self over a boyfriend or girlfriend....etc.....in my opinion is a lousy excuse, but then again who am I to judge someone who is obviously deranged or suffering from a severe chemical imbalance.

Some people commit suicide because they are overwhelmed by sadness, depression, bad events, massive seemingly unsolvable problems...and see it as a form of final relief from all that troubles them.

I don't think it has anything to do with "selfishness"........unless they are the fool who gambled with other peoples money...lost it all big time...then couldn't face the music...and took the cowards way out caused by the fear of public humiliation, trial and prison.

In some cases yes and some are mentally unstable. It depends on the situation. Now the wall street investors that dove out the window when the stock market crashed. Those were selfish greedy people

I wouldn't call it selfish. I call it sad and tragic. They were in so much pain and they couldn't see past it so they took their own life. I think it's selfish and mean to put down someone for doing it, although I fully understand feeling anger for someone who does. They left and it hurts. We've had 3 suicides in the near family and it is something that effects certain members for life.

Not necessarily. They are just in a state of mind. And if they wait that state of mind will pass. Unless it's cause by brain chemistry. In that case seek profession help on a suicide hot line.

They are hopeless, and sad, and full of pain and guilt. Escaping agony....I guess you could call that selfish. I don't, actually.

Usually at that point it's a cry for help. Also most of the time when you do get to that point you aren't in the right mind to think of what your actions could effect everyone else around you.

When someone gets to that point, their most immediate need is to end abject and relentless agony, they see it as a demanding priority before all else...more to get rid of something rather than a thing to take for themselves.

Yes, I think it can be a selfish act for the family left behind but I can also understand why some people do it. If they live in such pain each day they may feel that they just can't go stand it anymore. I think that some people don't commit suicide that have thought about it though because they don't want to hurt their loved ones. I think it's a tragedy when it happens......
