And... NEVER be the one to follow 'Dad' into the bathroom after he's done his 'business'...!!

IMO, young people, especially single, unmarried, un-partnered ones smell the worst. They don't care about personal grooming when they do not have partners to remind them. It is not about a person's age, both old people or young people will smell if they do not bathe or clean their clothing regularly. No need for perfumes or deodorants if one keeps the body clean, you would not smell bad. This is just a poor example of agism, based on a very stereotypical negative and unreal image young people have on elderly persons.

I hope not as I am 76 years old. They don't smell any worse than a person who smokes or drinks. Maybe their health is not the best and they can't bathe as often. A bath a day keeps the stinks away. LOL

I'm not sure because I have never smelled the smell of old people except for sick ones in need of bathing. I thought it was because of their medication. I did notice that I started needing a deoderate after menopause. My sense of smell has always been keen, to the point of annoying. My teenage girls used to borrow my blouses and I could tell which one took them by the smell. They couldn't figure out how I knew.

Absolutely. If you are around older people a lot you won't notice it though. I moved out of my parents house and then moved back in and BAM, I was convinced that the "old person smell" is real.

Obviously we don't smell as bad as the young folks according to the study, mostly because were not moving that fast.
Elderly people were said to smell less unpleasant and to have less of an intense stink than young people (20 to 30 years old) and middle-aged people (45 to 55 years old).

Terribly invasive scent. I believe it has tones of urine to it with the dank attic smell. O.ly sometimes though. Not all old people smell, just some.

i actually think younger people have a more foul smell than older people do. not all of them but some do.

I do not get the people who skip the deodorant routine before heading out and stinking up public spaces.

I know for a fact it is real. Go walking through a nursing home and tell me what the smell is. Its old people and fecal matter.

No, I don't think it is the people who smell, but a variety of other things that may contribute to these ideas. Elderly people are on a lot of medicine and any time you take medicine, it can change your scent. In a nursing home, or in a hospital, the IV's are filled with food or medicine, which have a distinct smell and then if the bed pans are left unattended then that is an unpleasant odor. I don't believe it is the people per say. I sat by the bedside of both my parents ( who have now passed on) and they did not emit a bad odor. My mother was only 76 when she passed from cancer and my father was just shy of 90 when he died. Neither smelled bad. They had proper care and that is why. I think if an older person is ill and can't take care of himself, and doesn't have anyone to help, then that may be a problem. Honestly, I think young teenage boys ( and I have raised two) smell the worst!!!!! UGH. They hate taking showers. Thankfully, once they discover girls then they want to smell nice to get the ladies to notice them. LOL But, I would rather sit next to an older person than a 14 year old boy!!!

My siblings, their wives, my husband and I took care of my Father before he died just shy of 95. He was taken care of by all of us.
