The term originated in an article by Mark Simpson[2] published on November 15, 1994, in The Independent. Simpson wrote:

Metrosexual man, the single young man with a high disposable income, living or working in the city (because that’s where all the best shops are), is perhaps the most promising consumer market of the decade. In the Eighties he was only to be found inside fashion magazines such as GQ, in television advertisements for Levi's jeans or in gay bars. In the Nineties, he’s everywhere and he’s going shopping.

Nope, and it's a stupid word that implies that straight men can't take care of themselves or enjoy fashion. Men can be masculine, feminine or something in between. Labels like this one get us nowhere!

when did a man stop being a man? i don't get it. look at movies. it used to be the good guy laid the bad guy out with a good old punch to the face. now, there is this portraying that the dude that gets the girl is a pussy metro. i'm just saying, dudes are naturally pretty. that's why we are called men. i propose a new movement...dudes stop trying to be pretty. as a man, i'm embarrassed by it.

Correct me if I,m wrong but I was told the term referred to young straight men who were overly conscious about their grooming and appearance.

I have various metrosexual guy friends, and my cousins are all metrosexual also, and I can ASSURE you that none of them are gay.

Metrosexual guys are just normal guys who like to take care of themselves, look presentable, BE presentable. Nothing else. People take things WAY out of proportion.

I doubt THAT many millions though. Taking care of one's self and looking modern shouldnt mean gay. That is how we stigmatize groups into "Acting accordingly". It's insulting to both gay and heterosexual men.

To me a metrosexual is a straight man who is impeccably dressed, enjoys plays and other refined forms of entertainment and is sensitive by nature. I would think most woman would love a metrosexual in their lives. While my husband is sesitive and dresses to please he does not care for shopping, musicals and museums. Dang...I wish he did.

I think that "The term metrosexual is usually used to describe a straight man who acts like the stereotype for a gay man meaning dressed the same way talks similiar and so on except straight." That's what they (Metaldane) said, and I agree with it. That is generally how the word is used where I live, anyway.

Not that I particularly agree with any gay/straight stereotypes - sure, some people will always adhere to certain stereotypes, intentially or otherwise, though most of us don't.

Well one thing for sure, metrosexuals are feminized to some degree.

I don't know, I don't think that someone acting out of sterotypical gender roles means that they're neccessarily acting 'femenine' or 'masculine'.

I mean, just because someone is metrosexual, it doesn't make them any less of 'a man'. They're a man if that is their gender identity. So I don't know how 'feminized' that is - they just act how they feel comfortable with.

I know many women who don't conform to stereotypical gender roles, and they're certainly not 'masculinised'. I think that this is a very complicated subject - what masculine and femenine are. And that's not really a discussion I want to get into right now (or on this site), I'm far too tired :)

Sure, there are masculine women, and femenine men, what I'm saying is that just acting differently than how people expect from your gender doesn't neccessarily mean you act in a 'femenine' or 'masculine' way.

It may be a predominantly female trait, but that sure as hell doesn't mean that every 'femenine' person does it, or that every 'masculine' person doesn't. I know many, many women who are not at all masculine, and who do not enjoy shopping at all. Trust me, I know, I am a woman.

And so, not every woman who enjoys football or computer games is 'masculine', and not every man who enjoys shopping or looking how they feel is good, regardless of whether that means heavily groomed and stylish, or bearded and 'scruffy', is 'femenine'.

When I saw masculine I mean I know women that can bench press 400 pounds. No long ago I saw an interview on TV with Fran Drescher who starred as "the Nanny" back in the 80's or 90's and she married her metrosexual producer who turned out to be gay and they divorced.

I personally don't think that having muscles and training makes you masculine.

"No long ago I saw an interview on TV with Fran Drescher who starred as "the Nanny" back in the 80's or 90's and she married her metrosexual producer who turned out to be gay and they divorced." So? There are plenty of 'masculine' guys that turn out not to be straight, or even guys at all (trans* people), too.

There are plenty of cheap shops in big cities, and going shopping doesn't neccessarily mean buying much or spending a lot of money.

Well the standard of living is much higher in large cities. That's just a fact. Yes there may be cheap shops, but overall the cost of everything is higher in large cities.

Yes, but they could easily live with family or friends/have found cheaper accomadation, or travel to the city whenever they can (that doesn't mean all the time, it could only be occassionaly as a treat when they've saved the money up). Besides, not all metrosexuals like shopping that much, or cities. They could still act metrosexual in many other ways, e.g appearance wise.
