Do you think it's ok to ask someone not to smoke in your house or car?

You!

If you give them the option to stand outside and offer them an ashtray, does this make it ok?

I've never met a smoker that would presume to smoke where no one else smoked. If I did, I'd tell them to smoke outside.

You bet it is. You have to live with the stank after they have departed. Just because they are numb to it means you need to be.

I used to smoke, and a heavy smoker at that I always respected those who didn't smoke at all, when i did go to someones house i would reframe from smoking a lot of times we would go outside so I could smoke,But as a non smoker now, I don't like non smokers who becomes dramatic about smokers!

Absolutely. They are the guest in your car, in your house. They must respect your wishes as the owner and host. It would be easier if you ask nicely, but yes. Most people should and will do as you wish.

I don't ASK, it's the rule. A smoker, knowing quite well that their smoke could be offensive to others, should be courteous enough to be the one to ASK before lighting up. In a home with non-smokers, a single cigarette can be smelled for a week, same with a car. We have friends who smoke, but we have a large screened deck where they can go if they feel it's necessary to get their nicotine fix. They know the rules, they understand, and there's no problem. My house, my rules, when I'm at their house I don't tell them they can't smoke, I just hang the clothes I wore outside for awhile until the smell clears out.

I smoke, and I would never light up in someone elses home or car. I don't have a problem if they ask, or tell me not to.

I smoke in my office in my home. It has an powerful exhaust fan on the wall to vent out the smoke so it doesn't get into the other rooms. If anyone wants to smoke in my home, I ask them to go into my office, or step outside onto the patio.

I think its the height of poor taste to smoke in anyone's house or car that is not your own. It wasn't too long ago that folks didn't give it a thought to do so. Now that it has been proven that 2nd hand smoke is extremely harmful, I am finding that some people will not even enter homes where smoking is done! Cigarettes in Wisconsin now cost around $5 a pack. What I find amazing are the number of teenagers who continue to light up and wonder "how in the dickens can they afford it?"

I know what you mean. That's half the reason I quit. My brand of cigarettes was up to $7 a pack! It got to be an expensive, nasty habit, and I feel better for having quit.

It's perfectly okay. It's your house and car, they should offer to do so, so you wouldn't have to ask.............

Even if you don't offer them an ashtray, it's still ok to ask them not to smoke in your home or car. That is your space, and they need to respect your right to not breathe their smoke and have it stink up your stuff. Your lungs don't have to suffer for their bad habit. I'm a former smoker myself, but I always had enough respect for others not to smoke in their space. I didn't even smoke in my own apartment, and I ask others not to do so either.

I have done this. It's one thing to smoke, but it's not okay to cause harm
to others by breathing their smoke. They can smoke outside. My mom
didn't like it at first, but stood my ground and she did that.
