Do you think it is right to tip for "Take Out" orders?

Tipping used to be for an appreciation of good service by the server. Good service, good tip. Bad service, no tip. But now all of the restaurants I see have all of the "tip jars" asking for tip for "take out" orders. Do you tip for "take out" or think people should?

You tip for personal service received. You already paid for the food and carrying it to the take out counter hardly qualifies as personal service.

Because you're using your gas & time to go pick it up. There is no one serving me.

Not really because you go get it yourself, you don't have it delivered. Sometimes I do on depending if I like the food however.
At a local coffee place, I always put in something.

It all depends. At a sandwich shop, some of the kids that work there are actually quite engaging and entertaining. Same at one of the local ice cream shops. I may tip if I'm feeling charitable or just appreciate the way the kids are "performing" while serving us. I don't think it is necessary to tip 15% or anything. I tend to overtip, anyway. But I will cut the tip dramatically if the service is poor, especially if I complain and it doesn't get better. When a gratuity is added to the bill, I rarely offer anything additional.

They get paid for their work. Each of us chooses if we will accept a job or not based on compensation and other factors, which might include the estimation of tips expected to receive. Tip jar or not, people working a takeout counter should not EXPECT a tip and should be grateful when they receive one. If not, they ought to look elsewhere for employment with better benefits.

It's not really a "Right or wrong" question to begin with. With take out, tips aren't really expected because the customer is getting it themselves. For delivery, you'd better tip handsomely... you're sitting on your fat butt while someone makes your dinner and another person puts wear, tear, and risks their neck in traffic to feed you.

    Good night.

Delivery is something completely different. You should tip generously for delivery service.

If the service was good, prompt, and served with a smile, then yes. Many people in restaurants don't make that good of money, and some tips actually help them out in the long run to survive. It's different when you're in a job that pays enough and you don't have to rely on tips. But many people need those tips. People who refuse to tip at all all cheapskates and have no consideration for others.

I understand the low pay and helping out issue. But what if you call in and just go to pick it up or are in a drive through. The person "serving" you is just handing out a meal with basically "no service" to warrant a tip. Do you tip at drive throughs? Just curious. I know most people in this industry will say tip because they need the bucks and are themselves some of the best tippers for the reasons you star above. Personally, I have an issue with tipping for take out or drive through situations.

I've never had to. But it wouldn't bother me to do so.

I've tipped all my life as well because i know of the low pay. The only time I won't tip is when I get BAD service, which isn't all that often.
