Do you think giving birth at home without medical assistance, not even midwifery is a good idea?

Human beings have been around for 10 to 20 thousand years and only in the last 60-70 years have women had their babies in a hospital,.. (and only the more advanced countries),....

    Life goes on,....

If something were to happen that required immediate medical attention, the mother or baby's life could be lost. That's not worth it to me.

People have been giving birth without the assistance of drugs and hospitals since...uhhhh forever!!!! Actually in the US, giving birth in hospitals are not as great and very expensive than other western countries. We have a high rate of cesarean section in the US. Doctors are so eager to just cut u and pull the baby out instead of waiting for you to have it naturally. They are quick to and pressure you to have drugs, not telling you the dangerous side effects. You might think because u were cut and u had ur baby that you are not missing out on something important in your life by having it naturally, but actually there are many things you miss out on when it is not done naturally and in a comfortable environment which most hospitals will not provide you with!

A good idea in terms of what? No, I don't think its safe. But I also don't think governments should step in to safe the families from themselves. Its a personal choice.

maybe to do things the natural way, savings on hospital and doctors fees, is it a good idea in general or a bad idea because of complications that may occur.

On a strictly scientific point? A bad idea. Its unsafe, unclean, and a lot of things can go wrong.

Its a bit of a trend these days in the west, I think go to hospital or at least have a midwife is best.. Better safe than sorry as they say.

i see. but what the causes of this trend? the hospitals are not good enough ? or they are expensive?

From what I've read its more of a personal choice, back to natural way of doing things.

If I ever become preggers, I do plan to give birth at home. I will have a midwife, but hey, if she can't make it in time then yippee to my friends and family. If there are problems, well the question didn't ask if i would seek medical help after the birth...

If anything went wrong, you better be prepared for a vacation to the county jail for neglect. If you arwn't a doctor, do not do anything but take an aspirin or other cold/flu/headache/heartburn med, save for taking a temperature or using sweet oil on an earache.

you don't go to jail for having a kid at home and with no one around. The question wasn't about getting attention for the newborn if it's ill after it's born. Why would you recommend Aspirin? Are we giving the Aspirin to the baby or the mother that's having or had the baby? Also the same question for the other meds you recommended. Or is that just a one-size-fits-all recommendation?

What I was saying was as laymen and women, we should stick to only taking over the counter meds without doctors ot the sweet oil or temperature. Complex procedures like pregnancy and other surgeries should at least have a certified midwife present. I feel it should be treated as neglect if an injury occurs because the persons decided to forgo decades of breakthroughs in childbirth for a "natural" birth.

Not really, no. Home births are fine but there should be a midwife there. Many births go smoothly and particularly if she's had many children before, it could be fine. But if there are any complications, you should have a midwife there to help, and you should also be within driving distance of a hospital.

There are too many things that can go wrong. It is not safe to risk the life of the mother or the baby to justify that like of decision.

Giving birth is a normal and natural event in a woman's life, but so is dying.

I would choose midwifery. But people should be free to choose whatever they're comfortable with.

Sure, they once did it that way, the natural way. They also once had a lot higher fatality rate when it came to birth.

I don't think that's accurate. The countries with the booming populations are the third world countries where many women still have no access to health care and give birth in a mud hut >.>

I however HATE even the idea of the pain with childbirth So I don't care how bad I am for wanting all of the painkillers and medical assistance possible if I ever have kids.

As long as there are no complications and if that's what the couple want then I don't personally see a problem with it. Way back when in the old days that's how it used to be done all the time. Of course if there are complications then there should be trained doctors and nurses around

True but at least there they might be able to fix it and right away, even so I would still rather be in a hospital.

At least they have the equipment and trained staff to assists if and when needed.

Prior to the 1900's the leading cause of death of women was child birth.
