Do you think calling someone a retard is ever OK?

Maybe I'm overly sensitive about it because my daughter has Down's Syndrome, but we've been fighting that term her whole life.

You're not being overly sensitive. My nephew has autism and the word "retard", no matter in what context the word is used, makes me uncomfortable as well.

I also don't think saying something or someone is gay is appropriate when used as a derogatory term and I write kids up for that in my classes.

Speech is just that speech. A word is a word, you choose how it affects you. A word has no power unless you grant it.

Speech IS sometimes power. If you want a say about something, and to have an arguement, it is power.

It only has power if you grant it. No one can offend you unless you allow it. For example, your typing in capital letters, has no influence on my response, it is because I don't particularly care what emotion you are trying to convey.

Does stuttering disability counnt as retarded. Bcause speech is retarded (slowed down/delayed) causing it to repeat syllables. Does that count as retarded? As in slowed down.

No. Many people have different problems with speaking. My grandson stuttered as a young child, but he is extremely gifted now as he has become older. The's just going on 13, but very advanced.

I'm sorry you have experienced people being rude and disrespectful. This problem of yours will make you stronger in the end. It is hard to ignore the billies, but it is possible.

I was bullied in middle school years and years ago because I have a physical limp. I just kept on holding my head held high and didn;t give the bullies the satisfaction of thinking they had hurt my feelings.

To be retarded in any manner is to be slowed or stopped, i.e. under developed mind, body, maturity, etc. Some might think that your having a lack of attention on one subject might be a form of retardation, but you most likely are focusing your attention of something unrelated to the topic at hand. Am I remotely correct? Sounds to me that you probably speak faster than your mind processes thought. have you ever tried meditation to slow your mind down? Am I in the ball park?

The focusing thing is correct completely. The teachers said it is because i speak fast. I still stutter at certain cyllaballs and i have to wait for 10 seconds until i can say the thing i wanted to say.

You have to allow yourself to calm down and let your mouth catch up with your mind or visa versa. I would try meditation. Meditation isn't some hindu/buddist bull crap, it really works to calm the mind. Even Jesus was big into meditation.

I've been called a retard at least once in my life and I've learned to just take it on the chin. I would never call a person who had an actual disability a retard though.

When I call my friends or my pets a retard I don't really mean someone with mental illnesses and defects, I just mean a idiot, really. And people with Downs, or any other diseases aren't idiots OR retards. They're the most genuine people in the world. :)

Yes, I know that, I've been picked on before. But I don't use words that would clearly offend people. I don't bully or pick on people, especially those who are weaker and vulnerable.

Why name call in the first place?

I have used some crude terms at times and while it may not be the politest or most elegant form of debate I am not using them to seriously imply that anyone is physically deficient as much as just screwy in their logic. If that upsets some people then so be it, I make plenty of special concessions in my real life and I do not say mean or insulting things to weak people that I know have problems. Nor am I known to initiate the jibes in some of my less than civil debates on SH either but I am also not going to walk on PC eggshells online simply because there might be a few overly sensitive types around that probably need to stay on PG rated websites and or get off the web entirely and go live in specially insulated bat caves.
