"Mental Retardation" is the legitimate medical diagnosis and this term should be used. Not the new and (not)improved "Mentally Disabled/challenged"
Someone diagnosed w Short Stature is called short. They are not Vertically Challenged or Height Disabled

My statement is not derrogatory. I have two retarded 3rd cousins. I am not ashamed to admit it, and they are not ashamed of who they are. I think of as a blessing that in life, their ignorance is a bliss that we will never regain. I think we that do not have any mental problems are burdened with a curse of the ego and struggle to attain id.

It makes me angry when that word is used. I teach children who are cognitively delayed...which 40 years ago were referred to as educable mentally retarded. So to use the word retarded...to throw that word out as an epithet makes the person doing it seem very insensitive and not too intelligent.

There is a difference between someone who was born mentally handicapped and someone who consciously chooses to be stupid, that is what a retard is, not someone who's mentally disabled. No one is making fun of mentally disabled people, they did not choose to be handicapped. When we call someone a retard, it is because they actually chose to be a retard. There is a difference.
