Do you think California will "set a tone" for the rest of the US by allowing homosexual marriage?

Tabby May 15, 2008 18:17:13

This morning, the California Supreme Court has overturned a ban on gay marriage. What do you think? Will this set the tone or will most other citizens against gay marriage just shake their heads and say 'Typical for California' and go on their way?

I actually think it is time for us to do as many other countries do it. #1 Civil Unions between any two adults whether romantically involved or not with all the attendant legal privileges, and #2 A religious union (call it marriage) for those who wish to do this.
If the goal is a legal union, this will solve the problem. If the goal is to attack various religious groups, it will not.

I sure hope so. Just remember that we weren't the first either in this country or in the world.

I feel I have to interject on the issue that california voters repaled the current civil rights issue, This has happened many times before, during the civil rights arguement of the 60s'.... In 1965 voters passed a resolution that would in effect overturn the brown vs/ B.O.E. decision in Clay county and in Randolph county.... Only to be overturned by the GA supreme court 3 months later citing the same civil rights argument that CA supreme courted recently cited.... CA sup court Ronald M. George cited the argument that ill informed voters passed an illegal propisition due to the CA ruling citing a 60-year-old precedent that struck down a ban on interracial marriage in California.
The same voter propisitions have been passed in many states everything from banning interracial marrige to restricting public education to "whites" in many states. The ruling was subsequintly passed after many states passed public voter propisitions restricting the rights of many based on the views of a few. "Even if city/state/county/fed resolutions are passed they may not hinder the rights of of those to the constitution has granted" chief justice R.M. George.

This is issue not unlike the "moral majority" passing laws regarding segregation and interracial marriage against the constitution of the united states..... due to an interpretation of scriptures in the bible.
Baised on every single poll on SH I would have to say that a much greater majority of people sopport gay marrige.

I hope more states make same sex marriage legal. Same sex marriages are not legal here in RI. My partner of 6 years, 5 years engaged, 1 year of commitment as of June 16 2008, and myself ove each other dearly and have great difficulty being away from each other even one night. We chose a commitment ceremony for we are committing our lives to each other. We have committed our very souls for the other. She is my heart and being. We would love to be legally married, but in our state of RI not Mass. Finacally we can not be legally married, yet we would love to.Neither one of us see marriage as just a religous ceremony. Marriage or commitment means you are giving yourself over to the other completely, 100%!! My partner will be there for me and I will always be there for her. We have all ready faced major hurdels and we have moved through them. Person who are offended or rabidly against same sex unions can walk away and hide their shame. What is wrong with 2 women who love each other and do not infringe on others views? They have a right to say and feel what ever they believe. I will not fight against their right to feel the way they do. What more can I say than ...I LOVE MY LADY...period.

You are wrong. First thing is California set no "tone" the people of California voted two to one that marriage is one man one woman. It was four black robed dictators that overturned the will of the people. Which is how liberals get their agenda in. Cause they damn sure can't win at the polls..............

But that scares me cause if the constitutional bit goes through.... man oh man help us. its hard as all get out to remove bits from the constitution, they would lock the debate up for near 100 years that way.

HOWEVER, the court's decision today isn't the last word, as the marriage amendment remains on track to go before California voters in November.
