Anybody who has owned a dog will tell you that they do. We had a border collie that definitely could show when she was happy, sad and (whenever unguarded chocolate was left in the house) - guilty as hell....

    XD

-Not true, animals lack consciences and morality. For example, eels have been known to cannibalize their young. Something a rational human would never do.

Everyone sees things from their own perspective but yeah, they have complex feelings and social constructs just like humans.

Why does this question come up so often?

YES. Spend time with any kind of animal for a long period of time you'll realize they do.

I hate when people say that animals don't experience happiness or sadness or any other human emotion...clearly they've never owned a pet before.

Ever watched what a mother animal will do to protect her babies, or grieve when one's lost? The devotion of a dog to it's friend when hit by a car, a dove to it's mate, a dog for it's owner? Jumbo was killed because he shoved another elephant he was known to be fond of out from in front of a locomotive, and took the impact himself. They smile, they laugh, they play jokes....they just speak different language/s.

You only have to own a dog to know that they have feelings. The sound of your voice tells them that you disapprove and their tail and ears go down. They are bouncy and cheerful when you come home and they show they are glad to see you.

Sure, I've even seen a dog get embarrassed/humiliated. One summer my friend had his German Shepard/Labrador mix dog shaved in an attempt to help it keep cool. Later that evening when it walked into the room and everyone burst out laughing it tucked it's tail between its legs and turned around and did the walk of shame back where it came from. True story!

I had a St, Bernard that had a surgery and had to have her side shaved. She hid until it grew back. God forbid you actually say the words...what happened to your pretty fur?

They experience every emotion. Watch kittens playing. If a person has passed away look at their dog. Watch horses who are waiting for their morning hay & pellets when it's a bit late.
When the horse I learned to ride on was sick I told everyone she doesn't want to ride anymore. I put her in paddock & saddled up another horse. After my lesson I went back to the first horse in the paddock. She ran to me as if to say, "Thank you." She knew who had her best interest at heart.

Different animals have different levels of emotional complexity and sensitivity, and some are more emotionally similar to humans than others, but generally speaking...yes.
