There was a storm where I live a week or so ago. In that storm, some manatees got trapped too close to the sea wall. the mother unfortunately didn't make it, but the baby stayed with her. They showed the baby hugging the body, but it saved the baby from being hurt by the wall as well. The baby and male would not leave until workers removed the mother from the water. THAT is grief. Animals have a lot more emotion and intelligence then we give them credit for. It's because we are arrogant and think some how we are the only intelligent species on this planet.

Of course they do. Even animals that you wouldn't normally expect to show or express emotions are capable of it, just not in the same capacity or way that we do. While it is more obvious with various domesticated animals that we socialize with, like cats and dogs, we did notice that one of our lizards was struck with grief when it's brother passed away. The surviving lizard would not leave or let go of the deceased one and would not come out of their cave that they shared together. He just hasn't been the same since.

Of course they do! Animals get used to certain people and other animals, and grow to love them just as humans do. They have a different culture and way of doing things, but all creatures with complex brains experience pain both emotional and physical. The only difference between humans and animals, is that humans have a sense of what is 'right' and a sense of 'purpose' in our lives. Without these two things, we would be exactly like animals.

It's one of the most basic emotions. Separation from attachment is emotionally traumatic.

I know for a fact that they do. My cat and my dog were best friends. They slept, played, ate, and cuddled together. Then my dog suddenly passed away, and my cat was never the same. She became withdrawn and very angry; she won't let anyone touch her now.

Most animals experience the same range of emotions that we do, only theirs are much more pure/raw.

With absolute certainty! My sister-in-law passed away from lung disease in November, 2010. Her dog's heart was broken. He never got over it and died just recently. Watch Animal Planet for a few hours and there will be no doubt in the mind of anybody!

Absolutely they do. Just look at any pet that has a pet pardner or even a close human friend /owner and when that pet pardner or human leaves then you can see it for sure. We humans don't have the market cornered in the grief department.Animal grieve too.

Absolutely. Elephants are known for it. PLUS with dogs, if their favorite person dies, they know it. and they'll show it.

Cat's usually don't give a crap though...as long as they're being fed XD

When I was in high school, we had a cat that checked on everyone at night! That cat had personality.

One day, I was late coming home because of a school event. That cat bugged my mom until she followed him to my bed and then he looked at her... like... "Well, where is he?"

Tell me that cat didn't care where I was! LOL
And when I came home, for the first time in months, he actually slept with me.

I hit the wrong one - computer froze and when I fixed it - it came up No. We had two dogs. One was an old black lab and was very sick. She had diabetes and all sorts of problems. I had a pitbull/shepard mix that hated everyone - me included! LOL! Anyway, when the lab died, my poor Ray was absolutely heartbroken. He kept looking for her - going to the door and hoping she would come back. He finally settled down after a couple of weeks but was lost without her until he finally died about a year and a half ago. Hopefully he found her on the other side.

i spent last night comforting a cat who had lost her dog sister to old age. she was acting completely out of character. animals can also grieve themselves to death over losing a companion.

Just watch the movie Hachi. Animals definately experience grief and all kinds of emotions. They may not be able to talk but they do have feelings. They get scared, and content just as we do.

When my Father died, his dog layed by the back door without moving for over a week,, didnt eat , had to force it to take water... It always waited there for dad to come home from work the same time every day,,, One day it must have realized he was not returning and went to his dish and ate , and was a companion to mom untill it died...

I know they do. Seen one of our cats get very depressed and wouldn't eat hardly at all and wanted extreme amount of affection and cuddling from us after his brother died, who he had been with for many years. Even looked like he would have tears in his sad eyes sometimes. Sad kitty face photos

Of course. A friend of mine had a dog that died. 6 months later, his other dog died for no apparent reason other than despondency.

My cat Buddy died almost a year ago. His pal Eddie almost immediately began to shed and chew on herself. She still hasn't gotten over it, and I worry about her.

They do. Anyone that believes differently is just ignorant.
