I'm half German. I was brought up to always watch our leaders closely to prevent the return of Nazis. On the other hand, when I talked to relatives who lived in Germany at the time I learned that much like U.S. citizens, the people themselves had little idea what Hitler would become and what was really going on in the government. Hitler had them convinced that if they just followed him the bad times would be gone and the good times would roll.
I did have a great grandfather who attended a Nazi meeting at a local German club here in the states. His comment? "Ach, they are CRRAAZY!

The Germany of today is not the Germany of 70 years ago, That being said, NEVER forget what the cost of bringing that about entailed. The Holocaust and the German war of conquest were stopped by military force, not a change of heart on the part of the perpetrators.

Germany's 20th century history is pretty dirty, but I've learned from America that you can't look at a country badly because of the actions of a group of corrupt people in high positions.
