Do you put your car in a neutral when you ride downhill?

You don't have control when you do that, down shift so you don't have to ride your brakes.

Nope, fact is when I'm going downhill i flick out of automatic overdrive just to have more control and save brakes. You can also damage your tranny by pulling it back into drive at speeds, or your clutch, unless you're bringing your engine speed up to match road speed.

Definately not. It's a good way to burn out your brakes and/or lose control.

No prob. I recently hauled a trailer into the North Carolina mountains using a 2011 F-150 in tow/haul mode. This mode informed the electronics that I had a heavier load than normal basically. The truck also has inclinometers and "knows" if it is going up or down a grade. I noticed that when the truck started down a grade, it automatically shifted into a lower gear. This might have rev'ed the engine higher and it does burn more fuel but I think the fuel is cheaper than using the brakes. On many mountain roads, large trucks are warned of a long down grade and told to shift into lower gear to control their speed. Those that fail to do so may find themselves in the run-a-way track ramps if their brakes overheat.
