Do You Prefer Texting or Talking?

Think your handwriting is bad? Pretty soon, you might forget how to talk. Statistics from the Pew Internet & American Life Project show that many people with cell phones prefer texting over talking on the phone. (If you are young yourself or know any young people, this should not come as a surprise.)

texting

Older people are starting to prefer texting, too, but the data shows that the younger you are, the more likely you are to prefer texting. "It is an art that's becoming as valuable as good writing," Janet Sternberg, a professor of communication and media studies at Fordham University in New York told The Associated Press.

However, there is a downside to all this typing. Sternberg has noticed that more students don't look her in the eye and have trouble having a simple conversation, which is kind of frightening. We've always kind of preferred e-mail as a happy medium between texting and talking, but we seem to be in the minority there. How about you?

I used to hate the whole idea of getting a mobile 'phone. I gave in, and got one, in 2005 when I finally realised that girls will NOT go out with anyone who doesn't have one! I just got sick of not getting any girls! However, it was a means to an end, and I still definitely prefer talking!

I like talking in person. If I talk over the phone I just sound really awkward.

I dislike talking on the phone -- talking to people when I can only hear their voice, is boring. Reading their faces is half the fun. At least when you text you can use smileys.

But the emoticons can be 100% fake and you have no idea. Harder to fake emotion in your voice.

Nah, I see your point and I did think about it, but I actually don't agree. What they write and which emoticons they use says a lot about what they're thinking; even when they're lying, you can pretty much tell.

I can't tell, I have been lied to over and over in text. In voice, not so much.

without a doubt. But if a texting conversation goes on too long...well, then you might as well have called the person.

I believe it allows you to think about your response more...but I do enjoy hearing certain peoples voices if I haven't seen them in a long time

Of course talking is better. However, internet forums (and texting and emails) have the advantage, that you don't have to wait "your turn" to talk, but can talk anytime you like. The computers simply hold the data, until the person is ready to talk, then notifies them of their new messages, and they can reply at any time, without awaking you from your nap.

Also depends on the situation. If you are at home, yes, Talking is 100% better and should be just the same as you are at work and need to communicate with your boss on something. However, if your significant or friend is not there with you, then Texting is fine

I'm a very, very expressive person and need my hands and facial expressions to convey what I mean most of the time. Text just comes off a, I don't know, kind of cold.

Although there are times where texting is preferred. Like if I know that the person I need to get a hold of is at work, I can just send them a text telling them what I need to tell them and not have to worry about trying to reach them at a different time/forgetting about it.

i think talking is awkward. cause in texting, you dont have that awkward silence. if you dont know what to say to a reply, then you can just stop texting and not feel bad about it!:D

I've prefered it for about 5 years now, but it hasn't changed how well I speak or anything else (in fact it has improved my spelling) and I still stick to the habit of polite eye contact when speaking, I guess I'm part of the lucky few? :) BUT, to clarify, I only like to talk on the phone 24/7 with my sweetie :)
