Do You Prefer Texting or Talking?

Think your handwriting is bad? Pretty soon, you might forget how to talk. Statistics from the Pew Internet & American Life Project show that many people with cell phones prefer texting over talking on the phone. (If you are young yourself or know any young people, this should not come as a surprise.)

texting

Older people are starting to prefer texting, too, but the data shows that the younger you are, the more likely you are to prefer texting. "It is an art that's becoming as valuable as good writing," Janet Sternberg, a professor of communication and media studies at Fordham University in New York told The Associated Press.

However, there is a downside to all this typing. Sternberg has noticed that more students don't look her in the eye and have trouble having a simple conversation, which is kind of frightening. We've always kind of preferred e-mail as a happy medium between texting and talking, but we seem to be in the minority there. How about you?

I hate how my voice sounds over the phone. I usually only talk over the phone with my parents and well, of course, if I have to make appointments, order food, etc. So yeah... I prefer texting.

texting is just quicker. if you want to talk, half the time the person won't pick up the phone or wont want to talk to you.

I'd rather talk in person, but I'd rather text than talk over the phone. Voice chat and video chat I am about as comfortable with as texting. It's pretty situational.

A lot is lost in the texting..and e mailing today....many times something is taken wrong or completely out of context because the tone of voice or voice inflection was not there...
Texting is good for certain situations tho...but it is way overused, and way to many use it to avoid contact...

you know I'm begging to despise that quote just because a guy texts his girlfriend more then he calls her does not mean he loves her any less then a guy who calls their girlfriend did it ever come across your mind that there maybe circumstances causing texting to be the major source of communication between the two and maybe the guy wants to hear his girl friend's voice over just some stupid letters on a phone now i'm saying the message is stupid but the reality of all this is it's the truth its just some letters on a screen that mean less then actually saying it

Texting is good for a quick chat, but for more meaning full conversation the human voice is always best.

Depends. If I want to meet a friend I'll text them. Once we're together, I'll start talking.

In person is always best, but I strongly prefer texting over talking on the phone. Text conversations are granular, so you never have to "hang up" or "call back." You just add to it when you can.

On the cell phone, texting. Obviously in person or across the room, talking. :P

Talking is the best way to actually get to know a person. But texting is the quickest way to communicate with someone who may be busy at work or school.

Face to face. but if using the phone I tend to prefer texting. Less misunderstands, you can refer back to a previous text, and if you want to stop talking you can conveniatly not hear/feel your phone go off.

I unlike many teenagers my age, ENJOY talking on the phone. Honestly, texting to me is a use only for emergencies, not a necessity. If I want to talk someone I call them or hang out with them, I honestly NEVER text unless my phone is dying and I need to let my mom know where I am real quick or send a quick bit of info while I am busy. BUT otherwise, I call or talk face to face. Never really been a big fan of texting honestly.

Considering I don't do much of both with most of my communication being done on the internet, I usually prefer texting. The exception may be getting directions or trying to portray a lot of information in short time. Other than that, I'm probably with the person I wish to talk to anyway.
