Do You Prefer Texting or Talking?

Think your handwriting is bad? Pretty soon, you might forget how to talk. Statistics from the Pew Internet & American Life Project show that many people with cell phones prefer texting over talking on the phone. (If you are young yourself or know any young people, this should not come as a surprise.)

texting

Older people are starting to prefer texting, too, but the data shows that the younger you are, the more likely you are to prefer texting. "It is an art that's becoming as valuable as good writing," Janet Sternberg, a professor of communication and media studies at Fordham University in New York told The Associated Press.

However, there is a downside to all this typing. Sternberg has noticed that more students don't look her in the eye and have trouble having a simple conversation, which is kind of frightening. We've always kind of preferred e-mail as a happy medium between texting and talking, but we seem to be in the minority there. How about you?

its a little more personal when you can actually hear the other persons voice..... also there are certain emotions in a voice that actually help you sense certain things compared to texting....

That is why if it ever came down to a question of talking over the phone or talking in person I think in person is better because you can not only sense things from the voice but you can actually get so many messages from the facial expressions of the other person.... (unless its someone you are trying to avoid and pretending to be sick or something... cos then texting is better to get away with without being caught :-P )

It is always inportant to communicate one voice. To be able to physically see the persons, changes in voice, how they are possibly feeling on the other end of the phone, is like being in the same room as them, but being on the end of the cell phone instead.

so much is lost in reading someones font .... it's always much better to hear the tone changes in someones voice or to hear them laugh or see their expressions ...=)

Talking allows you to communicate on a larger scale. However, I only prefer to text when I'm lazy.

As one of the oldsters, I prefer talking, but texts are really useful if I need to convey a message to someone who isn't answering. I know they'll get it quickly, and can call me back if need be.

Just because I have so many things to do, it's easier to have a texting conversation since immediate response isn't necessary and neither is undivided (or semi-undivided) attention. I really don't have time to talk on the phone so it's nice to be able to shoot a quick text once in a while.

Depends on the situation - for making plans, saying you are running late etc. texting is best - for anything more substantive talking is better - you lose tone and nuance on text and email sometimes...so it really depends
