Do you need to clean up your Facebook profile?

Got a Facebook profile with vulgarities or embarrassing pages you shouldn't have liked? Now there's a way to clean them up. A trio of Kent State University undergrads have put together the "Facewash" app that'll search through a user's Facebook activity and content for items that the user may want to hide or delete. That could include status updates, photo captions, and comments users left or received as well as pages and links that were liked.

"We realized that there's a lot of content that perhaps someone might not want a future employer to see," Daniel Gur, 22, said Wednesday. Gur created the app over the weekend with two friends and fellow computer science majors from his school -- Camden Fullmer, 21, and David Steinberg, 24. The three students built Facewash in less than two days while at a hackathon at the University of Pennsylvania.

    Here's a thought ..

the ADVICE I would give to anyone ..
    INCLUDING the LA TIMES ..
is to first REFLECT on what you are doing ..
before you commit it to a posting on-line ..

(besides .. these things are NOW .. (gasp) archived in the LoC .. )
so even with the app .. the backups are available for SEVERAL years of viewing ..
(yep .. quite a record of your most inane, silly, and downright 'WHAT THE?" postings)

Think b-4 posting anything and if you need to think about whether to do it or not, the chances are good that you shouldn't post it

i think if we were all honest, there would be pages or comments that we wish we hadn't been to on FB. In my case, I am on disability and will no longer work, but my parents do occasionally cruise through and check my page, and I have a LOT of pages and photo's that I "liked" that are on topics they don't necessarily care for.

I don't because I don't participate in "social media" unless absolutely necessary. Indiscriminate use can put you in contact with some very creepy people. If I wouldn't want to meet them in reality, I surely will not try to encounter them virtually. By the same token, people whom you'd rather not insult -- potential employers, for example-- might be offended by some inane thing you post. Like most moral decisions, if you have to ask yourself, "Should I?" -- DON'T. (My personal view is that Facebook is evil; it demeans precious concepts such as friendships, distracts people from more productive activities, and makes us technologically dependent cripples.
