Do you need religion to be a good person?

no you don't need
but religion (like mine) makes you better.

Be a spiritual being having a human being experience,and don't let religion get in the way of your growth!

Claiming it is required is ridiculous. With or without religion, good people will do good things and evil people will do evil things.

I meant to chose "Optional". I do not think you need to be religious to be a good person. There are many religious people who are not. I know many Atheists who are wonderful people.

No, you don't need religion to be a good person. There are WAY more Christians in prisons than there are Atheists, though I forgot the percentages. In my opinion, how good you are depends on how you were raised. If you grow up fearing consequences all your life, I'm sure you will be too scared to do anything bad. If not, then the chance of you breaking the law or doing something bad would be higher.

How about NO. I mean really...I know plenty of atheists who are good, kind and decent people. I don't think religiousness equals goodness.

Imparting someone with a set ideology, or clearly defined morals (especially one as outdated and hateful as most religions) does nothing but impair their ability to communicate and associate with other human beings (Especially if you want them to do so in a good-natured or polite manner). As previously stated, most religions also encourage hate towards at least one other group of people.

In my opinion, rudeness and hatred do not a good person make.

Actually, I doubt it would take that long. Any question that touches on homosexuality, abortion, politics or, well anything really, is quite likely to contain "It's against god!" as a justification for disagreement or conflict.

There's actually a reason I kept this question very, very generic. I'm not looking for specific examples, just over all. The whole picture if you will, not situational.

Some people do need religion to make the right choices. The idea of following God has helped a lot of people get off drugs and given them rules and guidelines to help them in their lives.

I am not one of those people. I do not care about religion or what comes with it. I am faithful to my wife, love my kids and do everything I can to help my community. I try to make the right decision because it is the right thing to do.

I am an atheist and I am a good person. i have met many good people who are and are not religious. There are also a lot of really bad people who are and are not religious.
