The U.S. Population Living in Coastal Watershed Counties
Over 50 percent of the nation's population lives in only less than 20 percent of the U.S. land area (excluding Alaska), which generates a wide range of pressures on sensitive coastal ecosystems. As our nation's coastal watershed county population continues to grow, it is imperative to understand, manage, and protect the bounty and beauty that have drawn so many Americans to our coasts.

reply - DDevlin780 2012/11/24 20:34:48noI live in a town called Lakeland. Named because of the number of lakes in the area. Most likely they are all old sink holes. I have a small pond in my back yard. Water fowl abound on a regular basis. Fun to watch. We are waiting to see if the several pairs of ducks make a nest and hatch some young ones.reply

reply - jasmine1 2012/11/24 15:22:08YES+1I live not far from Lake St. Clair which feeds into the Great Lakes. Most do not realize that the only difference between the Great Lakes and the ocean is salt. Large cargo freighters have perished in storms on these lakes. They can be beautiful but also deadly, just like the ocean. They are also very very large bodies of water. Thanks to Lake Huron we here in Southeast Michigan have wonderful water to drink.reply

I love the water....especially the ocean. We have a home on Assawoman Bay in Ocean City, but my dream is to someday have a beach front home. That would be heaven!!!
