I was born and raised in California which was quite conservative while I lived there from 1961-1985. Reagan was the governor and Sam Yorty was the Mayor of L.A. While I was serving in the Marines my parents moved from South Lake Tahoe to Grants Pass Oregon in 1985 and still living there today. Once my folks moved I had to change my home of record to Oregon since I no longer had a physical address in CA for Marine Corps administration purposes. I moved to Michigan with my ex-wife who was from that state from 1995-2004. By far the worst state I have lived in. I have lived in three Nanny States and still live in one (Oregon). The only conservative state I lived in was North Carolina while stationed at Camp Lejuene. Today I reside on SW Oregon which does have a mostly conservative state of mind.
The bad thing is so many have grown up with these taxpayer funded handouts and they don't recognize it as welfare. The same people receiving farm subsidies are crying about the single baby makers getting assistance or the Wall Street bunch taking bail outs. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
It's the middle class workers getting no handouts, and not wanting them, paying with higher taxes and higher consumer goods prices.
