The lotteries provide additional funding for state programs. In the case of Californie the schools benefit.

There's some good aspects to this (for example .. State of FL designates Lottery proceeds to fund 'Bright Futures' scholarships for students who have FL residence and graduate from FL Schools) ...

BUT .. seriously -- this also has a dark side .. as those with a Gambling Addiction .. who will also 'gamble' liberally in the Lottos too ..

(then there's the good and bad that comes from Lotto Wins .. (Discovery Channel presented some real horror stories) ...

The lottery gives pie in the sky hopes to the people who play, hoping to win a gazillion dollars. The problem is, IMO, the lottery is just another form of tax on poor people. Just check out the folks waiting in line to buy tickets, and you'll see what I mean. You won't find the Hilton's or the Rockefeller's playing the lottery, for real.

Here in Florida, they sold the lottery idea to the voters by leading them to believe the profits would increase education funding. What they did was used the lottery money for schools, as advertised, but reduced the school funding from the state'e general fund by the same amount. No net increase in education funding resulted from the lottery, so it was really an additional tax imposed in a roundabout way

I like the crossword scratch-offs and the bingo scratch-offs because it costs $2 and gives me like 10 minutes of fun rather than immediately scratching everything off and losing lol. I usually win $5-$10 when I buy one so I'm pretty happy with those odds. I won $250 a couple times... my grandpa says, "Play until you lose, and you can't win unless you play!" :-P

I don't really like them or not like them. I think people who spend literally hundreds of dollars on this crap have a gambling addiction and the likelihood of them ever winning is next to nothing. However supposedly the proceeds go to benefit people in need so I can't truly hate it.

I play very occasionally when jackpots get over 100,000,000 just for the fun of it.

I buy scratch off on occasions, If I am on a wining streak I will continue buying them, but once I start losing I stay off them for a while. I am currently off them.
