Soldier's homecoming during baseball game video here.

When 13-year-old Kyle Smerer ran onto Safeco Field during the Mariners home opener Friday night, he had no idea who was waiting there for him. After the fifth inning, as Kyle was participating in the Steal-A-Base contest, he was suddenly embraced by a man dressed as an umpire. His father, First Sgt. Steve Smerer, had come home from serving in Afghanistan and took this moment to surprise him.

I do enjoy them, yes. They bring a smile and I can use all of the smiles I can get. I only wish all of our people could come home to their families alive and healthy. My little neighbor just did. She looks pretty stressed, but she's home, alive and physically healthy.

Yes, I wish the ones from Vietnam were treated more like this! My husband was treated on a bus like he was a criminal! Only now is he getting the respect that he deserved back then. When people find out he's a vet, they thank him for serving this country! Our kids never seen it, but our grandkids have been there when people come up and thank him and they are in awe of it. They are proud of their Grandpa.

yes i love them they make me cry everytime because that means another loved one made it home safely. and i had 2 people close to me deployed so i know what its like. my son surprised me that way he was coming home after being in korea, and came home in the middle of the night. my husband was in on it. it was so cool. he was also in iraq.

Anytime one of our military makes it home I am tickled to death I wish that as a country we could repay the people that we put in harms way and make their lives a little better! Instead our heros are rappers that scream about killing cops and athletes that do drugs and screw little girls!

Just the other day had returning soldiers here at Ft. hood and one came back to a New Addition in the Family no not a child but a 9 week old Yellow Lab that was a rescue.

My dad did two 1 year tours of duty in Viet Nam. I remember saying good-bye and welcoming him home both times.
Nothing better than seeing him come thru the airport gates!

aww, that little video of all the homecomings made me cry. I wish there was a video of when my grandpa came home from WW2 to his wife and three daughters.

Yes I do and I actually get all teary eye seeing them. I guess it brings back memories of my Daddy returns from VN and the men & women that I worked with return home.

strangely enough they make me sorta miss deployment ...I know that sounds crazy, so let me explain ... boarding ship for deployment (what Marines call a "float") is exciting and exasperating at the same time ... being at sea is rather boring, until coming into port someplace for liberty (pretty fun and interesting) or going ashore / beaching for action ... pulling out / evac ops are chaotic and irritating as all hell, only to be followed by a long, boring cruise to home port ... but coming home after a long time away, to waiting family and friends - THAT'S WONDERFUL!
I've been both Marine and Sailor, and I've deployed as a contractor as well, and the process is the same every time! ... I don't miss being away, but I sure do miss coming back ...

It is very hard on the family left behind when a soldier deploys and repeated deployments make it so much more difficult. Marriages are hard to keep rock solid when so much time is spent apart and it takes a very special woman to be a good military wife. I have followed a couple of my pen pals over the years and I see the toll it has taken.
