Do you leave a light on outside of your house at night?

You!

Many years ago we were told at our neighborhood watch meeting to always leave a light on outside at night, as it deters burglars, etc. I turn my light on when it gets dark and turn it off when I get up. But, when I ride around my neighboirhood, more people don't have them on than do.

Yes, but never out of fear. I lock my doors and windows, but never out of fear. Fear and fearful thoughts of someone with bad intentions coming around your house actually sends telepathic energy "out" and is picked up by such dishonest individuals. Lock up, leave a light on, but be brave, and know how mind works.

I am never afraid at my home but I was told by a policeman at a neighborhood watch meeting that you should.

Should leave a light on, or should be afraid? RE: the policeman.

EDIT: I see you answer this question below...

No, not usually. Waste of money! I have three dogs that will bark and drive you crazy even when a family member pulls up or comes in the yard, so that helps out alot!

I do, but my man works nights and comes home around 5 am, so I leave the light for him.

Almost always have the porch light on until we go to bed. But we also have driveway lights on a timer every night. Never leave them on all night long.
INDOOR light(s), on timers if you're not home, are much more effective deterrents.

I leave my front porch light on all night and was told to do that by a cop at a neighborhood watch meeting years ago. And, I live in a good neighborhood and feel totally safe. We have had neighbors who have had their car broken into, though, and they say it would deter that. I don'y keep my car in the garage as it's full of my "stuff."

I am amazed at the number of people around here who have $70-80,000 worth of cars in their driveway, while the garage is used to store who-knows-what, all safe, dry and warm!

Yup...front and back lights on all night. We were told a few weeks ago by the officer patrolling our neighborhood that there had been some "suspicious activity" in the area. Most of our neighbors do, too. Small price to pay for added security.

I hope you don't leave your christmas lights on all night. I just hate it when people do that. Worse yet is when they leave them hanging up all year.

No, I don't leave my Christmas lights on all night. I've seen a few houses with lights still hanging from last year....the year before....who knows?!?!?!?

No I don't leave my porch light on, I have a security system, a husband, a cat and better yet... a gun. I see leaving the porch light on all night as being a waste of money.

But it does deter people from approaching your home. The police tell you to leave a light on outside. The few cents I would save wouldn't be worth it to me!

I don't know, criminals now are getting so bold these days that I'm not so sure having your porch light on will make a difference. However if it works for you, than by all means I support you doing it. Hopefully you and your neighbors get along and keep a lookout for each other as well. How about your doors, do you have deadbolt locks?

We have sensor lights that come on when it's dark and go off when it's light on each side of the garage doors. Since we leave our American flag up all the time, we need to have the lights.

I agree that leaving the light on helps keep my house and neighborhood safe. My girlfriend thinks that its a waste of electricity though. I also like it on when I come home from work or I can't find my keys. So, I turn it on before I leave in the afternoon and its on all night. My neighbors keep their lights on as well. Therefore, I feel safer in my neighborhood.

I leave 3 on plus 2 security lights that come on if someone enters plus I have the camera's for security. We use to never leave lights on to save electricity but after all the crime here in just this neighborhood more and more neighbors are finally turning their lights on.

Crime is generally low out around here so we don't worry that much. but I wouldn't leave a light on in any case. My house is a mind field of cats...less light means a good chance of stepping on a cat and making a loud noise when someone tries to walk where they shouldn't. And then the lights snap on and the shotgun comes out. Beyond that a 1/4 of the year we're in nasty snow and ice...stalking around my yard then is a good recipe for frost bite!
