Do You Have a Tattoo That You Regret?

You can be sure that Angelina Jolie regrets getting that enormous "Billy Bob" tattoo in honor of ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton. But beyond ink that didn't stand the test of time, there are plenty of other reasons to regret a tattoo.

Sure, tributes to romance are probably the most lamented tattoos. Johnny Depp famously tattooed "Winona Forever" on his bicep in honor of ex-girlfriend Winona Ryder ... then later had it changed to "Wino Forever."

But other celebs have made other mistakes. As Yahoo! Shine points out, Britney Spears' neck tattoo was supposed to mean “new life” in Hebrew, but the characters were written out of order, which makes it meaningless. The kanji tattoo she received on her hip was intended to read “mysterious” but it translates as “strange," the site reports.

As for the rest of us, many claim to regret going for the "tramp stamp" in high school (the name for the tattoo that decorates the lower back on females). While it may have seemed cutting edge then, it's not quite as cute when you're 50.

Wow. This picture shows a lot of redness, especially around the wings. Being totally ignorant about this stuff, I always wondered if there is pain for awhile after acquiring one?

I actually don't have any tattoos...I'm not allowed.
But I think I'd just want a little peace sign.

And why would any one regret that?

This is why I've waited so long to get what I want- I'm mature enough to deal with it, it is something tasteful, meaningful, and not on public view, and something I've wanted for a long time to get inked.

No, I don't have any. I contemplated it at one time though, now that I am older, I am glad I never got one.

I think you hit on a very good point kalamazoo. I took my girls to a waterpark a few years ago and one of the female lifeguards had tatoos on every, single inch of her body. I'm not kidding, only her neck and face were "clean". She was very close to 40 years old and I couldn't help but wonder if she wasn't just a tad bit regretful? It was absolutely astonishing.

Angie can always have the tat removed if she wants. Ain't like she can't afford the laser job. lol
Personally, I use temps. They're cheaper and I can change them when I get tired of them. :)

I had a birthmark removed with the same laser... Argon... and I can tell you my experience was extreme pain... and many treatments and ouch is the main word. Also, could not be exposed to sunlight for 3 months after each treatment. Not sure how different it is w/ tattoos, but I would bet since same procedure, would be just as painful. Not worth it to me!

Good thing I use temps then. :) They don't even hurt while being applied.

This bit about tat removal was interesting: http://tattoo.about.com/od/ta...

I think it's important to choose tattoos that hold meaning for you. Tattoos tell a story, they hold memories of a particular time in your life. When you grow as a person, or go through life changing experiences, a tattoo can symbolize that journey, even when you have passed that point in your life, you can still look back and reflect on where you've come from, who you have become. A tattoo can remind you to be who you are, to never slip back into an old way, of a loved one lost, of an obstacle overcome, or as a reminder that life is short and there is no time for regret.

There are some key factors to consider when thinking of getting a tattoo:
    1. Think about it for a long time, though it's not as sever as say sexual reassignment surgery, it is always best to know for sure that it is what you want, and what you will want in the future.
    2. Never get the name of your current partner/spouse.
    3. Never pick your tattoo from a sheet of flash.
    4. Always research the shop and artist before getting inked, make sure there work is legit and of high quality. Don't just take their word for it, find someone with a good reputation, an extensive portfolio, that has been doing it for a long time.
    5. If you're not 100% sure about it, don't do it.

I don't have anything that I regret but some tattoos on some older men ARE faded and blended and gross. One has to wonder if when they were readable, did they really do much to enhance the life of a much younger man. A 70-year-old wearing a Tattoo that says, "STUD" or "LADIES MAN" must feel pleased that no one can still read it.
