Unfortunately too many people think way too highly of a generic college degree. A college degree is needed for some specialized fields (such as engineering.)

Too many kids jump out of high school and right into college, and don't even know what they are going to college for. Going to college just to be going to college is a waste of time and a waste of money.

That used to be true but no longer is under the Communist Obama regime. Those that succeed pay and those that do nothing receive. Ask any unemployed college graduate that owes $40,000 or more how that hope and change Obama BS is working for them. Too bad they helped to get the socialist BS Artist elected!

It's not the norm, but it IS possible to make a good wage WITHOUT a college degree! I went from high school into the Navy for 20 years then another 20 years as a banquet chef pulling down $42,000 a year. I have a good friend in California pulling down $100,000+ as a computer tech and he didn't finish his junior year of high school!

right now it's better to go to a trade school because a lot of people are going to college when there's more of a demand for nurses, welders, carpenters, ..etc

No offense to those in college but some are just wasting time and money for a degree that won't even come in handy in the long run. Some people are making the right decision if they know what they're going to do but if they don't...All those classes are being taken for nothing.

I know I don't want to spend 4 years of college, two on the stupid associates degree and the other two on the bachelors in culinary arts. That's why I know I'm going to a trade school. Yeah I had many scholarships for colleges around the state but why bother if most of the best chefs started out as simple dish washers. There's no shame is starting out small.

By the time my high school classmates finished 4 years of college I was already making more per year than their degrees were worth and I had no student loans to repay.
I taught myself a proffession and mastered it before they were even on the job market.

You don't /have/ to. Plenty of people making good money never pursued higher education, and plenty of people with a degree are unemployed. It /can/ help though.

But not necessarily and not as much these days with the present economic crisis.

AI guru and genius extraordinaire Jaron Lanier didn't have a college degree but was sought after. Steve jobs dropped out of college and the rest is history. Artists often don't have degrees. Many people in the Information Technology sectors have training in certain areas but not college degrees and still get hired.

The world is also full of people who got college degrees to get ahead, playing the credit and loan game and all, and they did get ahead. Kind of...

    It depends.

But not to perform a job, just to secure it. As college is steadily becoming the norm, reputable employers are starting to throw out new resumes that don't have degrees.

Completing college doesn't always secure you a good career or job. I'm proof. I got a college preparatory high school diploma, two four year college degrees, some graduate credit and still don't have a job. Of course, I have some medical issues, but finishing college doesn't guarantee a person anything. I still don't regret graduating from college though. I learned a lot, and I had a lot of fun. :)

Not just college, but grad school too. Otherwise your choices and chances for advancement will be limited.

Very few ambitious chefs today don't have a culinary degree. Who would have thought that the day would ever come when you needed to go to college to learn to cook?

Want to be the next Steve Jobs? Not without a computer or software degree.

We've created a society where you're left at the gate if you don't get a post-h.s. degree.

I think it is essential to have a College Education. IF you are THE best auto mechanic, carpenter, plumber, etc...you can make a great salary, but GOD FORBID, you suffer an injury that takes you away from that kind of work, you will ALWAYS have back up with that degree.

College degrees are overrated these days. Unfortunately it was pushed so much that the college degree has been watered down; it's time to return to alternative forms of job training such as vocational schools and guilds.

It almost seems like a waste no matter what you go into but you will still have a better chance at a job with a degree in something. I'm going to college for fine arts, not because I expect to make money off of it, but because it's my passion and I want to expand my talents. I think along the road, the right job will come along regardless of what I major in.

Now I know some of you will say, the Navy trained me and yes they did, to a point, in my off time I would go to various other departments and learn their job on my own, I guess you could say I am a jack of all trades and a master of none.

So in my opinion, education is great get it if you can but it is up to you to have the drive and the dedication to get that high paying job even when the economy tanks, you are the one responsible for your destiny and its you who will decide the outcome.

Too often children are pushed into college by advisers and parents when they would be much more successful working in service industries, or owning their own businesses. Fortunately there is a movement here in Maine to provide a fifth year of high school which would be a collage of vocational training, college prep, business training, etc. There are so many jobs out there that don't have titles or colleges are not prepared to teach. How about becoming a stern-men on a lobster boat, or working in composite hull fabrication for a boat builder, or being a diesel mechanic for the hundreds of marinas here, or evaluating ocean water condition for aquaculture farms, or servicing medical x-ray equipment, or seeding area with oysters or clams, or owning a painting business to care for all of these ocean front homes and cottages. So many jobs but unfortunately all of the high school graduating class gets directed to colleges to study medicine, law, economics, engineering and on and on. We should strive at working with our children to help them discover a way that they can support themselves and their families and at the same time they can enjoy their work. Becoming a lawyer with the potential of making $200K does no good when you can't find work. Service jobs are always in demand.

You don't always have to go to a big University. It could be a smaller college for one specific thing. But I do think it gives you a better chance at the higher paying jobs. I know people who have gone to college for years with many degrees and are now working at places like Starbucks.

Trust me! I worked my butt off and made several decisions that put money in owners pockets and the most I ever made before college was about 1700 every 2 weeks.
    After college
I work about the same, I will always have a job in my field and after all my benefits are deducted I bring home 3090 every 2 weeks with a 15K a year raise coming in DEC
I am not saying this to be boastful, I am saying it because I did not get a Bachelor's Degree until I was 41 - I had 2 A.S. and an AA until then
The moral of this story. Never give up and do not listen to all the people who say you are too old to go to college. They just say that to make themselves feel better.

LOL --- imagine a person who graduated college in 1935, right in the middle of the depression... by 1941 the US declares war... due to his college education he is an officer in the military.... the survival rate for officers were far greater than enlisted men.... if you have no job, you can not pay your student loan...but you are far more likely to get a job with a college education, so that you can pay not only your loan, but also provide for your family....
