Unfortunately too many people think way too highly of a generic college degree. A college degree is needed for some specialized fields (such as engineering.)

Too many kids jump out of high school and right into college, and don't even know what they are going to college for. Going to college just to be going to college is a waste of time and a waste of money.

With the economy the way it is today you’re better off with a trade. The wealthy will always need someone who can work with their hands.

undecided, really....Smart people will always get ahead, despite what Obama says. There are lots and lots of college kids with 4 year degrees in useless subjects with huge student loans who are flipping burgers. I think if College was not just a costly extension of high school a degree would be worth more.

If you were an employer with two top candidates' resumes in front of you, and Person A has a B.A. in whatever and Person B has no college credits at all, I honestly think you would choose the degree if you had any sense. This is assuming they had roughly the same work experience in that field, of course.

Nothing wrong with digging a ditch but if you learn how to design one you will earn more money and have aches and pains.

with a college degree you have a career; without one you have a job and there is a difference. I go back to what former President William Jefferson Clinton said about a college education "if you don't earn a college agree, you are playing russian roulette with your future."

I feel that a college degree perpetuates a particular viewpoint that only validates and accepts people that share a certain train of thought. I I feel that most colleges inhibit creative thinking, create debt slaves based on rising tuition costs and you are not really being taught the truth. Instead I feel people are being brainwashed. Uniform learning however is necessary with the objective to allow people to reach their maximum potential. I feel in some instances people would be better off being taught to create and start business so they can gain life experience.

It didn't used to be that way in our parents generation, but today you need math & science especially to land a gute job, because of high tech. But before I think you just had to be a hard worker. Unfortunately, too many going to college now take mostly useless liberal arts majors. That is just a waste of money.

College is great and it can get you ahead, but it comes down to experience in the work force. I'm a college graduate, but didn't obtain my degree until 10 years after securing a job after high school. The only benefit I see in having a college degree is that it lets other know that you've got your ticket punched.

On the basis of income, my salary is much higher then those that graduated from college long before me. Now that I have both a college degree and over 10 years of experience I am much more valuable.

If obtaining, like one gentleman indicated, a generic degree, you are limited to entry level positions and that still doesn't guarantee you a job, per se....So what do you do? You go back to college to get that graduates degree!!! Even bigger mistake, because now you are not as marketable....You've become more qualified, yet still lack the experience....I don't know...maybe I don't have a clue what I'm talking about...I say start a business and work for yourself and be your own boss!

the question I'd ask you was: what was your major and were you willing to relocate. going to college is all about what you major in more than anything else. my undergrad is in accounting and I had no problem finding a job. i did a career change about five years ago and earned a MAT. even with all the cuts in education, I still haven't had trouble finding a job as long a I'm mobile...

Political Science, because I wanted (maybe still) get a law degree and get into politics. I served in the military prior and now I work contract jobs CONUS and OCONUS...so, I'm on the move when it comes to my job, but I still live in California, while my employer is in Colorado. Prior to getting out I got many job opportunities and they're still open, but not based on my college education...

interesting, i don't know the answer to this but what jobs are available to someone who is a PS major? I always though that with that degree you would be either a attorney or a politician or a lobbyist. you still have the option to continue your education as opposed to starting from scratch. the other thing is I've seen jobs that require a college degree but not necessarily in a particular field. thus, you would still be better off having a degree than not.

You can learn trades, also. Which, in the direction that things are going may actually prove to be more useful than MANY of the degrees people are getting. It's actually amazing to me how many worthless degrees there are.

Well in order to secure a job you need to be able to get one first, I strongly believe experience will get you a job and also secure it. Now, there are some jobs that require a degree before you can even work in that field such as medical. I think instead of weighing yourself down in debt, Work in the field first even if you're starting with minimum wage. That does three things, help you determine if its what you wanna do, help you gain experience what employers are looking for, and helps you stay out of debt!! The "American Dream" is not to owe someone for most of your life. People want a degree..debt. New car..debt. IPAD...debt. Damn

Why bother going to college at all when Sugar Daddy government will pay your way for everything? Who needs that kind of debt when there are so many freebies if you stay below a certain income level?

first of all a kid should get a general idea of what he or she wants to do. and sometimes a community college or trade school is all you need. usually way cheaper. like nursing school or it depends on what kind of job you want to get. one needs to research and see what jobs are available and go to school for that.

It's not always necessary, but as time goes on, it seems like it's harder and harder to get a good paying job without a college education. I'm actually finding that now it's not even just "college" that appears to be recommended, but graduate school or some other post-bachelor program.

in this economic climate tuition has risen little over four hundred and fifty percent since 1991..WHO CAN AFFORD COLLEGE...unless you are on the GOVT ASSISTED MINORITY LINE for SOCIAL JUSTICE....Back in 1991, I used nearly $22,000 for a four year education; now one can't even think about it unless they want to pay out nearly $150,000 for a four year, and MAYBE MORE if your going out of your home state...

It can be very profitable but not for everyone. I obtained my Masters degree at the University of Minnesota and never really needed it. That school taught me how much of a liberal agenda teachers and professors there teach. I would suggest you know something about who is running the classes before beginning.

The reason a college education is considered necessary today is because a HS education today has been so dumbed down. Not everyone has the ability to go to college and succeed at the academics. We need more trade schools. If we want manufacturing jobs to stay in America, usually a collegfe education is a waste of money. Look at all the "college" students taking useless majors and then graduating and taking jobs in totally unrelated fields. NO! Many kids should just get a job or go to trade school upon graduation from HS!
  • tblackb Andrew 2012/07/30 10:43:08

everyone needs some education beyond HS. however, a four year degree is the better route to take for your long-term future. the key is majoring in an area that will yield a job at the end of the day

Bill Gates also, experience trumps a college degree. If someone worked for 8.25/hr 35hrs a week for 4 straight years thats 55k they would make before taxes. I think its time for us to restructure our education system from easy mega loans and grants back to scholarship funded and maybe even contract education paid jobs....anything else seems better

General statistics show that qualified young people with college and university degrees have far more opportunities to find a well paid job than unqualified workers.

Furthermore, employers prefer polyvalent, flexible and performing people.

There are exceptions, of course, as talented people do not always need a university degree to be successful in business.

Its more the experience that makes a person who and what they are although education just about backs them to be who and what they are supposed to be in society.
I am very highly educated and have a wide area of experience as in its very diverse. It could prove to my positive point or my detriment as many people look at two pieces of paper to make a judgement on how good you are and what you can do in the corporate arena or society.
It doesnot work that way for many have the highest of highest qualifications but are idiots when it comes to execution as they have no knowledge on how to carry out the process. It is all about their willingness to learn that makes them who and what they are.
But in todays corporate world, everything works from the internal sources and not always from external application. External applications go in but no results come out unless there is internal referencing. It means that it doesn't matter what you have learnt but who you know within that makes the difference.
That's why if you really want to get somewhere in life, go straight for the head and that is when the best of you come through with regard to the job. Its doesn't mean compromise yourself, but it means prove yourself to the head as someone who is counting on results that benefit his co...

Its doesn't mean compromise yourself, but it means prove yourself to the head as someone who is counting on results that benefit his company not the individual who is out there. So if you want to get somewhere, Give it to the head of the Company and with proof of what you can do and it will always bring that result you have hoped for.
I prefer having my own business on the side as in today's economy, there are no guarantees for survival, this is something which will never die, as it is all about you, your finances, you life and experience wherein no one can be a judge to your qualification but yourself and that will reflect in the work that you provide to the world and the services that you render.
