Unfortunately too many people think way too highly of a generic college degree. A college degree is needed for some specialized fields (such as engineering.)

Too many kids jump out of high school and right into college, and don't even know what they are going to college for. Going to college just to be going to college is a waste of time and a waste of money.

Mmmmmmm? To me not so,.... just the general collage curriculum in the first two years is not a waste of time. Think about if you learn something once a week you didn't know before and may never need that knowledge again, is it a waste of time?

Humans waste enormous amounts of time on worthless pursuits of squat.

Jobs are going to become more and more scarce which means the more education one has the better. When I first started working the office had lots of secretaries. Today those secretaries are largely gone. So it is important for people to get as much education as possible.

It's a lie that college gets us a secure job. Most of my class is not working in the field they studied (including myself). This includes engineers, a usually very well paid career choice.

Another really big lie is for schools to say some careers are high paying. Ambulance techs very rarely can find jobs in big cities and the small towns only take VOLUNTEERS. Some large cities only take volunteers in their fire departments. Nursing can be another area where students are hit with the reality of too many volunteers. Many careers have way too many students for the jobs available.

Students, be aware! If you are looking for a high paying job you might just be better off staying at K-mart and waiting for the next big oil run. Men, keep it to yourself, families are VERY expensive and you can't even run away to the next state anymore.

If you are a very personable male who can sell himself, you might get a job in the career of your choice. Ladies who are really vivatious are next in line. Everyone else, good luck, but think twice before you sell your soul to an education mortgage.

A lot of good degreed people aren’t willing to MOVE, it comes up a lot that they must sacrifice their comfortable living in their home town with friends and family relations to get THAT JOB.

I see people that move for the jobs are usually more successful after 10 years than those that don’t. This especially true with major corporations.

The dumbing down of our educational system is done on PURPOSE BY THE GOVERNMENT! So they can control people's lives even more through PROPAGANDA! Honestly, what has The Department of Education gotten us???

The Dept. of Education got us Dumb Down and is raciest somewhat. Dumb Down was done to get poorly educated students out of high school and into the work place where a high school diploma was needed in many jobs. Plus the teachers could get better ratings and get pay raises, along with the Y generations feeling good about themselves.

Why do you think we are importing Mexicans? To replace the one's that WOULD HAVE flunked high school without the Dumb Down and had to do manual labor like cutting grass.

Now they are doing jobs that they are barely qualified for, but may be alright because the job is a LOT more interesting than high school.

Some even excel at their jobs with a poorly qualified high school grade scores because they are now motivated by more self esteem and a payroll check.

The same bone-headed "think tanks" that Sir came to political pressure on wholesale killing of fetuses in the womb and now realizes the U.S. demographics are failing to have enough people to compete with the onslaught of China and India.
    "Known as 0 population growth".

Your government and state "think tanks" at work.

Europe is in worst shape with the demographics, but not the Dumb Down.

Trades provide a very good life. I suggest if possible, that you should learn a trade then attend collage or university.Trades and working in that environment provide different life skills. Example; if you want to be an archetect get a carpentry trade first. Then you will have a grip on what works and what does not work.

For most jobs that are available now, a high school education is good enough. And trade school is fine if you want to go through there. If you are going into a job that needs it though, get it. Otherwise, it's up to you.

But what you DO need is some ambition and self-starting capability, instead of sitting at home and wondering why no one is knocking on your door asking you to please take this $100,000+ job. You have to get out there and search for it, and maybe take a lower-paying entry level job to get your foot in the door and then work your way up. In this day of instant gratification and government assistance, people don't seem to be doing that any more.

It is not always necessary to obtain a good job depending on the field you are planning on going into. Many people are discovering that their college degree only saddled them with debt but did absolutely nothing to help them get a job, as their degree is in something that is not a specified

Depends on what field you are going into. Right now there isn't many jobs and you will be stuck with a low paying one, to pay back your college loans.

The two most successful people I know do not have college degrees. Conversely, I know others with computer science or law degrees who wait tables and drive taxis.

Success is largely about personal drive, and passion for what you are doing. A college education can edify that passion, but it's no guarantor of success.

Because if your mind is brilliant in business ideals and you already have the same smarts about educational courses without going to classes, therefore start your own business and grow it into a success ; college wouldn't be an option; but can be optional later in business courses you teach or you aquire.
Look at all the billionaires and millionaires that didn't go to college.

There are a lot of good paying jobs in the skilled blue collar fields require Tech School training. Such as carpenter, electrician mechanic, plumber, welder, machinist, tool maker, etc.

I agree. In my high school the past year or two they've been driving it into us that the only way to be successful is to go through college. I know of a few plumbers that make extraordinary amounts of money with an apprenticeship. Even trash collectors can make more money than the average worker.

And we NEED these people. Not everyone needs to have a college degree! What we need more of, though, is people who WANT to work and earn their living instead of waiting for the government to send them a check.

As so often is the case, push-polling and reducing an issue at the intersection of probabilities and personal circumstances to a "yes" / "no" answer is part of what fuels the dumbing down of America.
For an overall population and the great majority of people, the data are clear: college education (and a diploma) decrease rates of unemployment and increase wages & benefits. [Unfortunately, so many college students need the time and expense to make up for not having learned properly through good primary/middle/high schooling.]
As an absolute? Of course not [think Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Taylor Swift, etc]. But the point is rather like all the idiocy such as "How can they claim smoking or obesity are bad for health when less than 100% of people have obvious disease, debility, or death from

Yes, as long as you pick a trade or path that will lead to a hopefully stable job future. There are many people working a trade, electrical, plumbing, Air Conditioning, Tool & Die who make just as much if not more than someone wit ha college degree or even degrees.
Many years ago the sheepskin was not a big deal experience counted but now in this vastly increased technological world a degree helps more...of course having a President who is business friendly is helpful. Having a socialist / community organizer in the White House who has driven the job market to 8.2% levels, has made it impossible for new companies to even start and have driven so much fear for any company to hire hasn't helped.
