Whenever I can, and in several different ways. There are a lot of people in need out there and it doesn't take much for you to change lives, and you might find your life changed in the process. And if you're not a people person, there are other things you can do to serve people, packing meals, collecting and donating food/clothing/etc. Especially at this time of year, several warehouses need help, Toys For Tots, Operation Christmas Child and the like...
I will say though, I have a hard time with "mandatory" volunteer work... kind of takes the meaning out of "volunteering". Volunteering should be from the heart, not because you are required.
I once did. I was a volunteer fireman for years, even chief for several years, but decided to leave that to the younger crowd now. I helped coach a softball team for the mentally handicapped. I have headed groups to clean up the two cemetaries in my town several times. I have picked up trash along the roads many times. I manned the hot line at the mental health center in the past. Now I have two kids with special needs and spend a lot of time with them. I also work six days a week. That doesn't leave me much time to volunteer any more.
I tutor twice a week - ESL; and I'm on the board of a neighborhood organization. That pretty much eats up my volunteer time although I'd love to be able to do more.
I have volunteered my time many places, many years. I was a Red Cross volunteer, volunteered my time at an orphan's home while living in Africa. I volunteer to run arts & crafts groups. I volunteered in political campaigns, making my own signs, hanging them all over counties. I volunteer at senior centers, hospitals. I volunteer to be an officer on different clubs. Whenever a need I try to volunteer.
