I learned so many job skills by volunteering. volunteering use to look impressive on a job resume because it meant that you would go the extra mile. Volunteering makes one feel good knowing that you are helping where needed the most. I have never been about getting rich, I do need income, though.

In New York City, law students can advocate pro bono for people to try and get their unemployment benefits back once they've been denied. I do that, and I do more basic volunteer work for a few homeless, minority, and LGBT organizations in Queens and Brooklyn.

Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, School functions, etc. I've been wanting to go on a Mission Trip to Haiti as a nurse, but I was diagnosed with MS earlier this year and it has really been kicking my butt. I've been working 2 full time jobs just trying to pay all the medical bills. My heart is willing, my body is not at this time.

I volunteer at my local church, in several ministries, from time to time. The Children's Ministry is my favorite.

Me too, I'm very picky about the charities I give money too, especially after reading stories about how much money the heads of these charities pocket for themselves.

I can't speak for all but, Church funds are supposed to be distributed as such that no more than 15%, I believe, is to pay for administrative fees. The rest is supposed to go towards outreach. You're welcome to view this website to find out what charities are on the up and up. I'm proud to say mine is one of them. :)

It wouldn't be fair to wash all Church charities with the same brush as those who "ruined it". My Church helps thousands of people and communities, and they have a proven track record of being on the up and up.

I'd suggest if you don't want to give to organized religion to give to the American Red Cross, but they're the same folks who collected all that money to help Haiti after the earthquake but after all this time Haiti doesn't so much as look like they've begun rebuilding.

Here is a link for you to check out any charity/ church /non-profit organization to see if they're on the up and up, if you'd reconsider ... http://www.ecfa.org/

Why not, if it's for a good cause you belief in, you are rewarded by feeling good by supporting the good cause.

    Currently:-

Tuesday - leading bible study group

Friday- youth group for kids with behavioural problems

    Sunday- Church children's club

Oh, I also am on placement at the moment - which means I'm working FULL-TIME FOR FREE! So, although I'll get a Masters Degree out of it, it sure feels like volunteering!

I enjoy the response from bluelady. So many people don't really realize all the avenues of volunteering. It's not necessarily going out to plant a garden in the projects. Few realize how much of their local government work is done through volunteers. In cities and counties all across the country, people serve as Planning Committee members, Economic Development Committee members, etc. Activities of local political chapters, all parties, are mostly performed by volunteers. So many people whine that there is nothing they can do that matters to what is happening politically in their city, county, or state, they don't realize they can make a difference, but you know what, it doesn't pay money, it actually costs you time and gas, but if you put forth the effort you can make a difference. It's all about getting involved, being a part of the process, volunteering your time to make your comunity a better place.
