I feel sad about what I see, but I don't give up hope.I could not bear to look into the eyes of a child if I did not have hope.

Everyday. I hate our arrogance, our ignorance and stupidity, and I hate our ideals. I hope that one day we can wise up before it's too late.

There are too many people, in the future when our population has been reduced to the right amount, humanity will be perfect.

7 Billion people have no hope, 500 Million can make this world perfect again

I frankly think we're re-creating the conditions of the Permian Extinction, when 90 percent of all species died out. That is, high CO2 and warming feeding off each other in a runaway feedback loop. This will cause ocean water circulation to stop in a way that makes sediment ferment and produce toxic hydrogen sulfide.

I'd give humanity about 200 years.

We instinctively notice the negative/threatening more readily than the positive 'cause it has survival value. But the statistics are clear that man is becoming progressively less and less destructive ("Better Angels of Our Nature", "The Rational Optimist", chapter on 'progress' from "Lessons of History", etc.)

Statistics by themselves aren't meaningful if they do not represent the right metric. What metric do you use to conclude that humanity's destructiveness is decreasing?

Deaths in wars, number of wars, humane treatment of each other, etc. The books offer numerous examples and metrics. It's why I offered the books as resources.

I think most of us do sometimes.

However, humanity is no different than it was 1000 years ago. People that think "things were perfect" in older times are completely fooling themselves.

Humanity is no different, but the conditions that humanity lives in could not be more different. 1000 years ago, human's impact on the environment was almost negligible compared to today.

everytime i watch the news. also, my son's tricycle was stripped overnight. some slimballs took the seat and handlebars and pedals. he was devastated when he saw it. he is only 3 and loved that bike. but some jerks had to break a little kid's heart. its not like they can do anything with a tricycle seat and some handlebars. they just did it so he couldn't ride it anymore. :(

I agree things are pretty lousy today, but I also think there is nothing really changed between us and the human of 5000 years ago. To invoke a worn adage: "history repeats itself", but it isn't really history is it? Its us being ourselves over and over again.

Very much so. We seem to care less and less about the people around us, the earth we live on and more about what is the best way to screw up someone else's life.

Yes, I do. If you accept the premise that a man as determined and as psychotic as Hitler will one day rise to power in a nation which possesses nuclear arms, then there isn't much hope for continued civilization. It may be only a matter of time.
